NCDPI MLs in DL/I Committee Application

The NCDPI DL/I Team is pleased to open applications for the MLs in DL/I Committee for 2023 - 2025. Becoming a member of this committee provides you with the opportunity to share your expertise on working with MLs within a DL/I environment (Two-way and One-way for Spanish speakers).  

The goals of the  MLs in DL/I Committee are to:

  • Bring greater awareness of the impact of DL/I on MLs
  • Grow and strengthen ML focused DL/I programs (Two-way and One-way)
  • Increase collaboration among pertinent entities to support MLs in DL/I

The committee meets virtually on the 4th Thursday of the month (with a few exceptions) from 9:00 am - 10:00 am.  Meetings for 2023-24 are scheduled for  9/28, 10/26, 11/30, 1/25, 2/22, 3/28, 4/25, 5/23.

Applicants should work in or with a program designed to meet the needs of MLs (2-way and 1-way for Spanish speakers) and be available for the scheduled meetings on a regular basis.

TALGS 2024

TESOL & Applied Linguistics Graduate Student Conference

Saturday, February 10, 2024, East Carolina University campus

The TALGS (TESOL/Applied Linguistics Graduate Students) Conference aims to provide a serious yet relaxed forum for professional discourse on a variety of topics relevant to the study of language, granting a comfortable environment for discussion between students, researchers, and teachers.  

 

Call for Proposals
The conference welcomes cross-disciplinary proposals with relevance to language use, language learning and/or teaching from a variety of fields.

NEW ML Virtual Libraries Shared in BOY Sessions

Program Quality

The beginning of year (BOY) Multilingual learner (ML) Program Quality session offered an overview of the NEW ML Program Quality Library and explored:

  • Guidance and legislation related to MLs,
  • Program quality aspects such as the:
    • LIEP
    • ELD Standards
    • Global Languages Endorsement (NC's Seal of Biliteracy)
    • Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I) 
    • professional learning
    • and more
  • Charter specific information
  • Networking and Communication

Participants shared highlights from their own work with MLs, recommended updates and edits for the New PQ Library, and completed a PL survey.   

 

Complete the survey, review the Presentation Slides, watch the Archive and explore the new library to learn more.

Call for Applicants – M2-Si Developer Team 

September 1 Deadline

Call open August 1 - September 1, 2023

 

NCDPI and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) are calling for applications from 3rd-5th grade educators who teach science to multilingual learners (MLs)* in North Carolina public schools to serve as paid consultants on grant-funded research and development. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has been awarded a federal grant to develop an assessment system – the Multilingual Multimodal Science Inventory (M2-Si) -- to support multilingual learners (MLs) in science in 3rd- 5th grades. 

 

Participants will receive: 

- A stipend of up to $3000 for participation in the research and professional activities**

- Registration and travel costs to attend the 2023 North Carolina Science Teachers Association (NCSTA) Professional Development Institute (PDI) November 2-3 and a two-day orientation meeting on November 3 - 4 in Winston-Salem, NC.

Registration Now Open for WIDA Español: Combined Course

September 7 Deadline

 

Join us for the WIDA Español: Combined Course Offering, a 2 day in-person workshop + online resources!

 

Participant Requirements:

    • Available to attend the full two-day training. The two courses are designed to compliment each other and are not available as separate offerings in NC at this time. 
    • Have a strong command of Spanish since the workshop will be delivered primarily in Spanish.
    • Work in or with an NC Spanish DL/I program (2-way or 1-way for Spanish speakers)

The NC ML Teacher Network Leadership Team is a group of in-service teachers working together to plan opportunities for all teachers who work with multilingual learners. The team develops resources and interacts with colleagues from across the state to discuss and reflect on best practices for ML students in a collaborative structure for professional growth. Becoming a Network Leader on this team allows you to share your expertise across the state!
