Education Week Mark Lieberman | August 22, 2023: 5 Signs a District Will Be at Risk When ESSER Runs Out - School districts need to start preparing for how they’ll cope with the expiration of pandemic-relief aid from the federal government. Districts that are experiencing declining enrollment and made recent increases to teacher pay or staffing levels should be particularly vigilant. Those are some key takeaways from two new publications out today from advocacy and research organization the Education Trust and the school finance consulting firm Education Resource Strategies. The groups have assembled resource guides for districts to assess how likely they are to be in fiscal hot water in the coming years and how they can best target their remaining resources to help improve academic outcomes for students.

K-12 Dive Naaz Modan | Aug. 21, 2023: NAEP on track for online administration in 2024 - With its first successful online field test in 450 schools this past spring, the Nation’s Report Card is one step closer to remote proctoring and administration. The long-term goal for remote test administration was fast-tracked by the National Assessment Governing Board and the National Center for Education Statistics, which oversee and administer the National Assessment of Educational Progress, after the COVID-19 pandemic made it infeasible to give the test in 2021. “The pandemic and NAEP’s inability to administer the 2021 assessment provided sobering lessons,” wrote Peggy Carr, commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, and Lesley Muldoon, executive director of NAGB, in a March 2022 blog update. In June 2022, NCES for the first time provided a timeline of its innovation plans, which include NAEP shifting to online administration in 2024, remote proctoring and administration conceivable sometime after 2026, and adaptive testing in 2028.

Back to school season is here! As your family prepares for the 2023-2024 school year, here are some quick steps to make sure your student has access to healthy school meals:
-
Remember to check your school's Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) status. Schools participating in CEP provide meals at no cost to their students, without families needing to complete a school meals application! Find information about your child's school's CEP status on their school district's website.
-
If your child's school is not operating under CEP, make sure to complete a school meals application for eligible students to receive free or reduced-price (FRP) school lunch. Contact your child's school nutrition department to check your child's FRP status and for more information about the FRP application process.
In non-CEP schools, students eligible for reduced-price meals might be required to pay $0.40 for lunch this school year for the first time in many years. School breakfast will still be free for reduced-price eligible students. Visit your school's or district's website, or contact them directly, to confirm if this is the case in your area.
