Call for Applicants – M2-Si Developer Team

Call open August 1 - September 1, 2023

NCDPI and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) are calling for applications from 3rd-5th grade educators who teach science to multilingual learners (MLs)* in North Carolina public schools to serve as paid consultants on grant-funded research and development. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has been awarded a federal grant to develop an assessment system – the Multilingual Multimodal Science Inventory (M2-Si) -- to support multilingual learners (MLs) in science in 3rd- 5th grades.

Participants will receive:

- A stipend of up to $3000 for participation in the research and professional activities**

- Registration and travel costs to attend the 2023 North Carolina Science Teachers Association (NCSTA) Professional Development Institute (PDI) November 2-3 and a two-day orientation meeting on November 3 - 4 in Winston-Salem, NC.

Eligibility Criteria

Grade 3, 4 and 5 educators who teach science to multilingual learners and who are willing to commit to the following activities:

  • Attend the NCSTA 2023 Conference November 2-3, 2023 and an orientation meeting Friday, November 3, 4-6pm and 8am-5pm Saturday November 4, 2023, in Winston-Salem.
  • Provide a letter of commitment from your district that your district agrees to participate in the M2-Si research within 7 days of notification of your selection for this research project. If your district requires a research application, the letter may state that the agreement is contingent upon the research being approved.
  • Implement up to 20 standards-aligned M2-Si activities (of up to 10 minutes) with their students from November 2023 – May 2024, and complete self-reflection activities on each.
  • Participate in a virtual Community of Practice with other educators one hour per month from November 2023 – May 2024.
  • Allow research team members to observe the implementation of M2-Si activities in their classroom up to eight times between November 2023 – May 2024.

We encourage teams of educators from a school or district to apply. Teams will be prioritized in the selection process. Final selection of consultants will be made according to the research needs of the grant.

* As of March 21, 2022, NCDPI shifted to using "English Learner" for policy and legislation purposes and "Multilingual Learner" for all other purposes. See this letter or watch this video for more details.

**Stipend includes $1000 in compensation for attending the NCSTA conference, $500 for the post-conference orientation meeting, and $1500 in compensation for other completed project activities; educators who are compensated by their district to attend the conference will waive that portion of the stipend.

Day 1: Navigating la corriente

Audience: This one-day hybrid workshop is designed to support educators of bi/multilingual students in K-12 bilingual settings.

Description: This workshop creates a space for critical dialogue among educators on the topic of integrating a variety of linguistic resources in the teaching and learning of bi/multilingual learners. At the core of this workshop, participants identify priorities for translanguaging spaces, the language(s) used by students, or their cognitive engagement. Through interactive activities that leverage the use of technology for innovative in-person professional learning, participants navigate la corriente through the strategic implementation of translanguaging pedagogical moves in bilingual education, regardless of educational policies or programming. The course includes an optional pre-workshop activity and access to the Translanguaging Playground.

Day 2: Attending to Equity through Bilingual Instruction

Audience: This bilingual workshop is designed for educators serving emergent bilinguals in Spanish bilingual programs. It engages educators in a guided and interactive analysis of instructional practices that elevate and honor emergent bilinguals’ assets.

Description: This one-day bilingual workshop will invite participants to explore instructional planning for the bilingual classroom from an asset-based perspective, recognizing that emergent bilinguals bring many contributions to the school community. Specifically, participants will discuss bilingual students’ dynamic identities and communicative repertoires in the classroom. This workshop will connect ways educators can intentionally maximize the linguistic practices of emergent bilinguals through a multimodal approach to teaching and learning.
