STEM Schools Progress Rubric

Have you utilized the STEM Schools Progress Rubric?

NC STEM School Progress Rubric

Research-based Quality STEM Instruction

The STEM Schools Progress Rubric is a strategic planning document that is valuable for any school or program within a school that wants to improve STEM teaching and learning.

To get the most out of the STEM rubric, consider the following:

  • Maximize the Rubric. The rubric is an instrument to be used by the whole school rather than an individual. It requires the input and perspective of various stakeholders within the school as well as outside such as parents, business partners, and community members.

  • Identify your current level of performance. For each Key Element, use the Quality Indicators as benchmarks for coordinating areas upon which to focus within your School Improvement Plan.

  • Be patient. There are many attributes associated with quality STEM instructional design. Finding what is right for your school and community will take time. Involve all stakeholders,  within and outside of your school. Be sure to keep record of what works well with your student population.

  • Develop your culture of learning using STEM. Student achievement through inquiry is highly rewarding and often leads to expanded student interests and deeper understanding of content. Nourish extracurricular opportunities that may arise and encourage academic exploration across content areas within your school.

Obtain your copy of the STEM Schools Progress Rubric by visiting the NC DPI STEM webpage.

NC Global Education (Larger)

Global Education Partnerships with France

North Carolina has international agreements or Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with public education systems in Spain, China, and, since 2020, France! One of the objectives of the MOU with the Académie de Reims in France is to establish partnerships between teachers in France and North Carolina so that they and their students can work on common projects virtually.

Application Open to All K-12 Teachers in Any Subject

Please see the 20-minute Overview of School Partnerships video and/or the slides as a PDF with information about submitting an online application to be matched with a colleague and school in France.

Here's the shortened URL to the online application: bit.ly/NCandVAapplicationReimsPartnership

Questions about the MOU with France can be sent to the NCDPI Global Education Steering Committee at ncglobaleducation@dpi.nc.gov.

Additional details are on the International Agreements page of the NCDPI website's Global Education section, including information about the other MOUs and an updated list of current and past partnerships with France!

K-12 Science Standards Revision Updates

State Board Approved 2023 K-12 Science Standards

The Office of Academic Standards’ Science team is excited to announce that the 2023 K-12 Science Standards were approved by the State Board of Education at their July 6th, 2023 meeting. The work was completed under the processes and protocols outlined in the NC Standard Course of Study Manual. The process included feedback from focus groups in each State Board region, one-on-one interviews and over 14,000 responses to surveys. Nearly 60 different professional educators from across NC districts, charter schools, and institutions of higher education helped review the response data and revise the standards. Thank you to everyone who participated in the review and revision process.

The adoption of the 2023 K-12 Science Standards is the end of the first stage in the process, with the focus now moving to the “installation” stage. Over the 2023-2024 school year, NCDPI will be working alongside leaders from PSUs to ensure all stakeholders are aware of the new standards, have opportunities to review changes from the 2009 standards, and prepare for the new standards to be implemented beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.

Please note, the current 2009 Science standards will remain in place for classroom instruction and assessment for the 2023-2024 school year.

To support the start of the “installation” stage, the Science Team has prepared several documents to support school and district leaders.

  • K-12 Science Standards Installation Timeline  - An initial timeline for installation of the 2023 standards with key activities and steps for NCDPI, PSU leaders, and teachers
    • The Science team will begin working with school and district science leads later this summer to prepare future support documents and plan professional development.
  • 2023 K-12 Science Standards  - A folder containing ALL grades/courses within one document as well as each individual grade/course’s set of standards
  • Crosswalks of the 2009 and 2023 Standards - A folder with a  crosswalk document for each individual grade/course’s standards

The Science team looks forward to working closely with PSU leaders over the coming months to support all stakeholders in preparing to implement the 2023 K-12 Science Standards beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.

Stay tuned for updates through the K-12 Science listservs.
