PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

CAST for World Languages

New Resource for World History

NCDPI Social Studies has an exciting new resource for World History! The Chronological Documents for World History tool is designed to help teachers find primary source examples that could be used in their instruction of specific objectives during specific chronological periods. This supplemental document provides potential sources that can be integrated into curriculum and lesson plans to provide students with additional materials to analyze and evaluate. Public School Units (PSUs) have local control to determine curriculum, therefore, the Chronological Documents for World History tool is not meant to be:

  • curriculum
  • an exhaustive list of primary sources,
  • required to use for teaching and learning
  • a checklist of documents that are required to use or access

In the footer of the document, there is a link where educators can recommend additional sources that can be used in certain time periods for specific objectives.

The new  Chronological Documents for World History tool is live now and ready for you to use today!

Access other NCDPI-created Resources

Disclaimer:  Because North Carolina is a local-control state, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) does not provide lists of resources outlining specific reading texts, books, authors, or other primary and secondary resources. Prior to use, the Social Studies leadership in local PSUs should carefully analyze the resources. Learn More

Attention Teachers of Founding Principles of the United States of America and North Carolina: Civic Literacy!

~Did you know that there are 13 Founding Principles required by N.C. law to be taught in the Founding Principles of the United States of America and North Carolina: Civic Literacy Course?

~Are you currently teaching all 13 of the “Principles”  identified by the N.C. General Assembly?

If you would like to learn more about the Founding Principles contained in the legislation and discuss ways you can ensure  all of them are incorporated in your curriculum, consider taking the Founding Principles course in Canvas. You will earn 2.0 CEUs , reflect on some of the Founding Principles you may already be teaching, and plan ways to integrate those you are not currently teaching.

If interested, fill out this form. When asked the name of the course, put in “Founding Principles”.  The course will run from Sept 11 – November 6. Registration ends September 16, 2023.

Contact Tom Daugherty with any questions.

NCDPI K-12 Social Studies: On-Demand Professional Learning Sessions

As the Office of Academic Standards continues to strengthen its vision and mission to support districts, schools, and teachers, the NCDPI K-12 Social Studies team has several on-demand professional learning sessions. Using the link provided will allow educators to access all on-demand opportunities, including the ones listed.

One-Stop Shop: Refresher on the SS Standards & Supports and Onboarding Materials for Teachers to New NC SS Classrooms

This professional development session will contain brief overviews of the standards and objectives for the social studies standards. In addition to basic terms and ideas surrounding objectives, we will also cover resources and materials that currently exist for the newly adopted social studies standards.

American History

The American History on-demand professional development session will help teachers of the high school American History course determine how to approach curriculum decisions. Since the American History I and II courses have been condensed into one course, teachers need to make decisions about what concepts and topics will help them cover the required material in a timely fashion in alignment with the new standards.

Building the Case for Social Studies and ELA Integration in K-5

This professional development will help participants learn ways and best practice pedagogy for appropriately integrating elementary Social Studies standards into the English Language Arts curriculum and instruction. The primary focus will be to help districts struggling to meet the goals of the statewide literacy mandates while simultaneously advancing the teaching of Social Studies in the K-5 classroom.

Teaching the Standards for Founding Principles: Civic Literacy

This professional development has been developed into a five-part mini-series.  This PD will take teachers through ideas, activities, resources, and best practice strategies for teaching the Civics Literacy course. Special attention will be given to alignment to the “principles” outlined in the Founding Principles legislation and the Geography, Behavior Science, & History Strands. The recordings for this PD are presented as a 5-Part Series: The Introduction , Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and a Bonus Session!

Teaching SS with Primary Sources

In this session you will learn from Elementary, Middle, and High School teachers who are using high quality primary sources to teach the NEW Social Studies Standards. This session will engage you with ideas for where to find and how to use primary source material to facilitate meaningful learning. Teacher presenters will walk you through lesson activities using high quality primary sources aligned to specific standards. An expert from the North Carolina State Archives will share examples of primary sources from their collection that would be impactful in supporting teaching and learning. Gain strategies and resources to build your personal primary sources toolbox!

Gilder Lerhman TOY 2023

The  2023 Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year award honors exceptional elementary and secondary school American history teachers (including state and local history). The national winner receives a $10,000 prize presented at an award ceremony in their honor in New York City. State winners receive a $1,000 prize, an archive of classroom resources, and recognition at a ceremony in their state.

Angel Ledbetter is North Carolina's 2023 Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year!

Angel Ledbetter fell in love with history and politics in kindergarten while following the 1992 presidential election but her passion for learning began much earlier as one of six children. After graduating from Appalachian State University in 2009 as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow with a degree in Social Sciences Education with a concentration in Political Science, she became the sole Social Studies teacher at Rutherford Early College High School. REaCH has taught her the value of relationships and of ensuring that students are actively engaged in doing history. Her philosophy that all students should read, write, think, and talk every day guides her practice. Angel's passion for history has led to a love of traveling and a desire to expand her own knowledge for the benefit of her students. The James Madison Fellowship allowed Angel to earn her Master's Degree in Teaching American History and Government from Ashland University in 2021. Angel continues to truly live out her history nerd dreams by serving on multiple boards, including with the National Constitution Center, teaching online with North Carolina Virtual, and attending summer seminars at historical sites across the country.
