Charter Schools Advisory Board Highlights

CSAB Basics

  • CSAB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • There are no regularly-scheduled CSAB meetings for July or August 2023.The next regularly scheduled CSAB meeting will be September 11-12 at the DPI Building in Raleigh.
  • CSAB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page
  • CSAB action items are heard the following month at State Board of Education meetings. Those meeting agendas are also found on Eboard.

Reports

Ready to Open Updates (RTO)

Dr. Natasha Norins, OCS Consultant, provided final Ready To Open (RTO) presentations for seven schools. Legacy Classical Academy, School of Arts for Boys, Aspire Trade High School, Movement School Northwest, Wayne STEM Academy, Mountain City Public Montessori and Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy are slated to open this upcoming 2023-24 academic year. The CSAB unanimously approved recommendations for these seven RTO schools. Final SBE decisions for these RTO schools will be made on July 6.

 

Amendments

Ms. Nicky Niewinski, OCS Consultant, presented two amendment requests.The CSAB voted unanimously to approve Dogwood Classical's request to relocate from Cabarrus to Iredell County. The CSAB also approved Union Day School's request for a mission statement change. The two approved amendments will move forward to SBE in July.

 

Intra-agency Reports

The Office of Learning Recovery and Acceleration presented the Charter Learning Recovery Report. Dr. Michael Maher and Mr. Calen Clifton discussed recovery analysis broadly for all public school units and provided closer analysis for charter schools.

 

Ms. Angel Goodwine Batts,Integrated Academic and Behavior Systems (IABS) State Team Lead, presented on the differentiated support plan for MTSS in identified charter schools

 

School Improvement

Z.E.C.A. School of Arts and Technology presented initial improvement plans per recent state board renewal stipulations. The presentation outlined the recent comprehensive needs assessment and plans to improve the quality of teaching and learning. The CSAB will meet with Z.E.C.A. again in late June to check for a status update on the school's improvement plan.  

 

 

 

ICYMI

CSAB/OCS Updates

The Charter School Advisory Board gave a farewell presentation to outgoing Board Chair, Ms. Cheryl Turner. The CSAB unanimously voted to approve Mr. Bruce Friend as the new Board Chair. Mr. John Eldridge was unanimously approved as the CSAB Vice Chair.

 

Ms. Jenna Cook, OCS Consultant, continued discussion regarding revisions to renewal guidelines. Additional discussion will continue at the September CSAB meeting.
