NC DPI Press Release | June 8, 2023: State Effort Helps Teachers with Licensing Costs - TeachNC will ensure federal relief dollars remove financial barriers for aspiring teachers. Financial assistance is now available to new and pre-service teachers in North Carolina facing the cost of taking state-required license exams. Under a new initiative, TeachNC, a teacher recruitment resource within the Department of Public Instruction, is providing reimbursements for licensing exam costs or study materials for licensing exams, which can average at or above $450. The effort is being funded with $3 million from the federal Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) controlled by Gov. Roy Cooper.
EdNCEric DavisDear Legislators, For decades, NC public schools have provided the critical element to lift our state up and make it one of the most attractive places to live, work and raise a family. The competition we face in a global economy creates the need for us to recommit in investing in public schools for the benefit of all North Carolinians. As the body charged by our constitution with “supervising and administering the free public school system,” the State Board of Education (SBE) brings over 100 years of combined experience serving, managing, challenging and leading public school districts and individual schools across our state. We have personally led the transformation of some of our most challenged schools and brought innovative strategies to lift the academic achievement of our students.

Evidence of the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on student outcomes, particularly test scores, has been documented nationwide. Prior work from the Education Policy Initiative at Carolina (EPIC) also shows widespread negative effects on attendance, test scores, and grade retention in the 2020-21 school year.
The purpose of this brief is to provide updated statewide descriptive data on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on student outcomes into the 2021-22 school year. In particular, the brief will answer the following research questions:
How has student attendance changed from pre-pandemic through the 2021-22 school year?
How have course grades changed from pre-pandemic through the 2021-22 school year?
How has grade retention changed from pre-pandemic through the 2021-22 school year?
How have suspensions changed from pre-pandemic through the 2021-22 school year?
EdNC Hannah McClellan | Academic performance of charters and traditional schools is similar, DPI report says - From 2019 to 2022, charter school enrollment in North Carolina increased 19% – the fifth highest growth rate in the nation, according to the Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) annual report to the General Assembly. “The size of our charter school students is equivalent to a large district,” State Board of Education Chair Eric Davis said. At the same time, data show that charter schools and traditional public schools perform similarly, based on school performance grades and school growth. This is the first year DPI has included academic data in its charter schools report.
