Charter Schools Advisory Board Highlights

CSAB Basics

  • CSAB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSAB meeting is June 6 at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSAB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page
  • CSAB action items are heard the following month at State Board of Education meetings. Those meeting agendas are also found on Eboard.

Reports

Ready to Open Updates (RTO)

Dr. Natasha Norins, OCS Consultant, provided Ready To Open updates for schools slated to open for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year. The CSAB made preliminary recommendations for these RTO schools. Dr. Norins also provided updates on schools that have requested delays through the Office of Charter Schools. RTO recommendations go forward to SBE in June.

 

Renewals

Ms. Jenna Cook, OCS Consultant, provided the CSAB with updates on both the 2023 and 2024 renewal school cohorts.Ms. Cook also reviewed OCS renewal site visit procedures with the CSAB. There was discussion on the current renewal guidelines and the potential for any updates or improvements to the renewal criteria..

 

OCS Updates

Ms. Ashley Baquero, OCS Director, provided SBE, staffing and operational updates. Ms. Baquero informed the CSAB that the Office of Charter Schools received 16 new charter applications. This includes one accelerated applicant seeking to open in the 2024-25 academic year. The remaining fifteen applicants are seeking to open during the 2025-26 school year.

SECU Scholarship

NC SECU Scholarship

The CSAB was pleased to honor the three finalists for the NC Charter Schools 2023 NCSECU  People Helping People Scholarship.

 

Mr. Corey Andrews, Henderson Collegiate Academy; Ms. Kaymille Sherman, Voyager Charter Academy; and Ms. Lillian Milholen, Chatham Charter School, were finalists out of a record-setting submission of 37 seniors from charter schools across North Carolina.

These three exemplary seniors are heading to UNC System schools next fall.
