Monthly Standards Update

In April 2023, the NCDPI ELA Team began review of the current 2017 ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS).  In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Review Phase, the NCDPI ELA Team will provide monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELA SCOS.

These updates will be sent every first Friday of the month. *Please note: Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) monthly updates will be merged with this standards update to consolidate and streamline communication.

Current Phases for Standards:

• ELA Standard Course of Study (End of Grade/Course Student Expectations): Review Phase
• Literacy Instruction Standards (Educator Expectations for Teaching Literacy): Installation Phase

ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS) Updates

The Review Phase

The ELA Standard Course of Study defines what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of each school year or course.  In April, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Office of Academic Standards’ team kicked off the review phase for K-12 ELA Standards.  These standards will follow the NC Standard Course of Study Internal Procedures Manual in terms of process and timeline. PSU Contacts for ELA Standards Review

To ensure public school units (PSUs) receive communication regarding ELA Standards Review, a survey will be sent to PSU ELA leaders to collect contact information on individuals who will serve as PSU ELA Standards contacts.  

If you would like to serve as an ELA Standards Contact for your PSU, please contact your PSU's ELA leader(s).

Literacy Instruction Standard (LIS) Updates

Year 2 Installation Timeline While the ELA Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) sets student expectations, the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) set educator expectations for teaching literacy. In October 2021, the North Carolina State Board of Education approved the LIS as outlined in Section V of SB 387: Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021. The LIS serve as a framework for the development and alignment of curriculum and instruction for all public schools. All curriculum and instruction is expected to be modified, fully-aligned, and implemented beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.  For information regarding the LIS, in addition to these First Friday Updates, please visit the Literacy Instruction Website and view the Year 1 Installation timeline that details the progress of the LIS implementation. LIS Learning Series Last Two Sessions for the 22-23 School Year! Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, there has been a series of professional learning involving multiple content areas.  The LIS are to be used by all teachers in every content area for core instruction.  This series focuses on integrating the LIS into standards-aligned content area instruction.
