FLANC ShareFest 2023

Spots are still available for the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC)'s annual ShareFest, which is free and held virtually so that World Language teachers, including dual language/immersion (DL/I) educators, can participate from across our state.

International Literacy Association logo

Using Literature to Promote Understanding, Empathy, and Global Citizenship

Webinar at 5:00 - 6:30 pm on Tuesday, May 9

Literature has the power to open minds to new worlds, new understandings, and new possibilities. This free International Literacy Association (ILA) Webinar, held in partnership with the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY), explores ways to leverage high-quality, global literature for powerful learning opportunities. Mónica Montañés (author of Different), Mari Kanstad Johnsen (illustrator of Bedtime for Bo), Paloma Valdivia (illustrator of Book of Questions) and Sara Lissa Paulson (translator of Book of Questions), whose books were named to USBBY’s 2023 Outstanding International Books List, will be on hand to discuss their work and how engaging young readers in world literature can help them become active global citizens.

 

Registration is required to attend the live event and watch the recording. Please note that the live event will be accessible only to the first 300 attendees who log in on the day of the event.


US Holocaust Memorial Museum

Construyendo Puentes: Bringing Holocaust Education to the Spanish-Speaking Classroom

Webinar at 7:00 - 9:00 pm on Tuesday, May 9

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is offering a Spanish resource workshop on Tuesday, May 9 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm EST. Note: This workshop will be in English. During this free virtual event, participants will meet Holocaust education leaders working at the state and local level and learn how to bring Holocaust education into classrooms with high quality Spanish-language resources, foundational classroom-ready lesson plans, relevant cultural connections, professional development and educational programming.

AP Summer Institutes for World Languages

Each summer, College Board offers Advanced Placement (AP) Summer Institutes across the country for educators who want to explore an AP course and its exam in detail, including unit guides, sample syllabi, teaching strategies, instructional materials, and pedagogical tools.

 

Both online and in-person AP Summer Institutes are available, and here is a list of events with AP World Language sessions based in or near North Carolina with upcoming registration deadlines:

Call for Nominations

Lead with Languages Scholarship for High School Seniors

Due Friday, May 26

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) launched the Lead with Languages Scholarship Program in 2019, which is dedicated to addressing a critical national shortage by bolstering the pipeline of future language educators. This award provides merit-based scholarships to graduating high school seniors committed to pursuing the language teaching profession in languages other than English. Recipients are awarded $1,500 per academic year, and the scholarship may be renewed three times following the initial award for a cumulative total of $6,000 per recipient.

Lead with Languages Teacher Scholars also receive complimentary ACTFL membership that includes access to the ACTFL Mentoring Program aimed at early-career language educators during their participation in the program, as well as for one year following graduation and entry into the teaching field.

Professional Award Nominations for Individuals & Groups

Due Wednesday, May 31

The ACTFL Professional Awards Program recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of language education. Awards and nomination procedures are announced and candidates' names are solicited through calls in ACTFL publications and letters to ACTFL member organizations each year. The results of the selections are announced at the ACTFL Annual Meeting, which will be in Chicago on November 17 - 19, and in the Winter issue of The Language Educator magazine.

Board of Directors Nominations for K-12 & Higher Education

Due Friday, June 9

ACTFL is now accepting nominations for the 2024 ACTFL Board of Directors. Each year, ACTFL elects at-large members and a president-elect to the ACTFL Board. For the 2024 Board, the president-elect will represent K-12. In addition, there is one at-large position open to represent higher education.

 

For more information, read the position descriptions and expectations on the ACTFL Board Nominations webpage. All ACTFL members in good standing for at least three years are encouraged to apply (five years for president-elect).

Japan Foundation Los Angeles

Japanese Language Learners Event Grant

Applications due Friday, September 1

The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles (JFLA) provides financial support of up to $1,000 for Japanese-language related events on the national, statewide, and/or regional levels (speech contests, quiz contests, presentational events, etc.) that are intended to motivate a large number of Japanese-language learners in multiple schools featuring different educational levels (primary, secondary, collegiate levels, and adults) and promote Japanese-language education in the area. Closed events for a single school are not eligible.

Classroom Resource Grant

Applications accepted on a rolling basis

Qatar Foundation International (QFI), LLC Classroom Resource Grants provide up to $1,000 for primary and secondary educators of any subject to purchase supplementary resources, materials, and activities for their classrooms. Designed to support teachers with limited classroom budgets and demonstrated need, Classroom Resource Grants enrich students’ learning of the Arabic language and/or about Arab societies and cultures by providing access to high-impact educational materials and experiences. 

 

This grant program is open year-round, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. To learn more, please go to the QFI Classroom Resource Grants webpage.

LIS Learning Series

LIS in the Content Areas Learning Series

Literacy in ELD at 3:45 - 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 11

The NCDPI English Language Arts (ELA) Team has offered a series of professional learning throughout the 2022 - 2023 school year that focused on integrating the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) into standards-aligned content area instruction. These sessions are open to K-12 educators, including World Language teachers, coaches, and administrators who want to reflect on biliteracy practices.

The slide decks and recordings from the past LIS in the Content Areas sessions are archived on the LIS-Based Professional Learning page in the LIS Toolkit Canvas hub. Learner's Mindset

The focus for this month’s Portrait of a Graduate Playbook is Learner's Mindset. The updated playbook includes new activities by grade span to reinforce this competency. Each month, another competency will be added until all seven are reflected in the document.
