Carolina Journal CJ Staff | April 17, 2023: ‘Media advisory’ boards would review complaints over certain books in schools - Within the 2023 N.C. House budget there is policy intended to improve transparency regarding classroom materials in K-12 schools. One directs every local board of education to form a local “community media advisory committee,” tasked with “evaluating challenges from parents, teachers, and members of the public to instructional materials and supplemental materials because they are unfit.”
Carolina Journal Evie Edwards | April 19, 2023: OPINION- I’m a female athlete, mother, and Democrat calling on NC to save women’s sports - Female sport exists to showcase the awesome ability of the female body and mind to accomplish feats of strength, speed, rigor, and agility amongst other female athletes. But without a separation of the sexes in sports, females will find themselves excluded from their own sports rather than celebrated in them.
WRAL•NEWS Emily Walkenhorst | April 19, 2023: Judge: NC's unfunded education mandates total $677.8M - Judge James F. Ammons Jr. largely sided with low-income school systems and state officials, over state lawmakers and the legislatures Fiscal Research Division, in his ruling dated Monday. The money would go toward things like early childhood education, special education and expanded support for economically disadvantaged children, principal and assistant principal pay, among other efforts.

S384: Carbon Monoxide Detectors/School Bldgs.

Bill Summary - S384 would require a survey and report on the need and cost of installing carbon monoxide alarm and detection systems and radon testing in unequipped existing public school buildings.

S411: Students in Home School Take PSAT/AP.

Bill Summary - S411 would require local school administrative units to allow home school students to participate in administration of the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) or PLAN tests, and advanced course examinations, such as Advanced Placement.

S631: Fairness in Women's Sports Act.
- Bill Summary - S631 would do the following:
- Prohibit male students from playing on middle or high school interscholastic or intramural teams designated for females, women, or girls.
- Prohibit female students from playing on middle or high school interscholastic or intramural teams designated for males, men, or boys, unless there is no comparable female team, and the sport is not a contact sport.
- Require a student's sex to be recognized solely based on reproductive biology and genetics at birth for purposes of athletic participation.
- Create a civil cause of action for students who are harmed as a result of a violation of the bill, or who are retaliated against for reporting violations.
- Create a civil cause of action for public school units that suffer harm as a result of following the requirements of the bill.

DPI Press Release | April 18, 2023: Analysis Shows NC Students Made Gains on Pandemic Losses in 2021-22 - “The results from the 2021-22 school year empirically confirm what we’ve been hearing from teachers and principals and parents around the state,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt. “Our schools and districts have made incredible strides in helping so many of our students get back on track to their pre-pandemic performance. This data also tells us there is more work to be done and fortunately we still have federal funding available to support interventions targeted at the students who need it most.”
