United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

 

Construyendo Puentes: Bringing Holocaust Education to the Spanish-Speaking Classroom 

 

Teaching and learning about the Holocaust provides an essential opportunity for all students to think critically about the past and their actions today. Across the country, demands for teaching materials that enable Spanish-speaking students to examine the Holocaust in Spanish are growing. During this workshop, meet Holocaust education leaders working at the state and local level. Learn how to bring Holocaust education into classrooms with high quality Spanish-language resources, foundational classroom-ready lesson plans, relevant cultural connections, professional development and educational programming. 

 

Key Learning Outcomes

  • The importance of equitable access to Holocaust teaching and learning resources to help students consider how and why the Holocaust happened through foundational lessons and resources

  • How to bridge the relevant histories of Spain and Latin America to support cultural competency goals 

  • How to utilize Spanish-language primary and secondary sources to support a range of learning outcomes across disciplines

  • Where to find Spanish-language Holocaust teaching resources and educational program

Join a Roundtable Discussion on High School Enrollment for ML Newcomers!

Please Share with HS School Counselors and Registrars!

To help school counselors and registrars answer questions about enrolling Multilingual Learner (ML) Newcomers in high school, PSUs began a statewide discussion on best practices last December. To add to the discussion, NCDPI will host another Roundtable, facilitated by Cumberland County School (CCS) Counselors, Kristi Newitt and Leslie Jones. 

 

Join the conversation on May 9th from 4:00 to 5:00 pm to learn how CCS manages newcomer enrollments in High Schools. Register now.

 

As a reminder, NCDPI released the Out-of-NC-Public-School Transfers document last fall to all PSUs.

2023 Growing Success for Multilingual Learners Summer Conference

Building Relationships for Multilingual Learner Success | June 20- 22, 2023

 

The NCDPI ML/Title III Team invites ALL educators of Multilingual Learners (MLs) to participate in the Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference. 

 

This year's conference will be held at McDeeds Elementary School in Southern Pines, NC.

 

 

During this summer’s conference, educators will have the following opportunities:

  • Best Practices; 
  • Common Space: Collaboration and Co-Teaching for MLs; 
  • Engaging Schools, Families, & Communities for ML Success; 
  • Glimpse of GLAD; 
  • Making Content Comprehensible with SIOP;  
  • Taking Flight for Academic Success: Integrating Content and Language Development; and
  • Supporting MLs in Health Education with the NCDPI Healthy Schools Team **NEW**

Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and North Carolina Collaboratory. The webinar highlights teacher inquiry that informs policy and practices to support multilingual learners. 

 

This webinar is open to all educators in North Carolina.

FREE Virtual Intro to American Sign Language Course for Spanish Speaking Families 

BEGINNINGS, for Parents of Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, is providing a FREE virtual introduction to American Sign Language course for Spanish speaking families who live in NC.  Instruction in this course will be presented in ASL and Spanish only.  Please share with families!
