ACADEMIC STANDARDS

Greetings from the NCDPI GLE Team! This update will provide resources and suggestions for sharing information with your students about earning the Global Languages Endorsement (GLE), North Carolina’s Seal of Biliteracy, which is one of five high school diploma endorsements available to graduates.

Please peruse the information below and the details about the GLE on the Global Education Recognitions page for Students that can be quickly accessed at https://bit.ly/NCSoBLGLE.

Updated GLE Data Posted

Data graphic for GLE newsletter

Since its inception in 2015, the GLE has recognized over 35,000 North Carolina graduates with proficiency in over a dozen World Languages. Details for each graduating class, 2015 - present, are updated annually and made available by charter school or district on the GLE Webpage. We encourage all GLE stakeholders to download a copy of the most recent "View Only" spreadsheets with the Class of 2022 data for their own analysis.

For more information on data pertaining to World Languages in North Carolina, explore the newest World Languages in North Carolina flyer outlining 2021 – 2022 statewide data, including insights on language offerings, GLE graduates, program enrollment, and Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I) programs.

Webinars are done annually when the GLE data is released for each graduating class. The GLE Team is currently in the process of planning for this spring’s upcoming asynchronous option. Be on the lookout for more information on that opportunity and access the archives from past broadcasts and/or professional learning on the GLE Webpage.

Whether it is informing teachers, counselors, students, or the community, this brochure can serve as a quick reference guide and help communicate key information. The brochure contains sections for policy requirements, benefits of the Seal of Biliteracy, student testimonials, quick facts, and links for accessing further information on the endorsement.

GLE Programmatic Guidance & Supports

CDM process and NC's Portrait of a Graduate

The Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) process continues to be a method for personalizing learning and accelerating students in high school courses across North Carolina, including in the areas of World Languages and English Language Arts. NCDPI updated various aspects for the implementation of CDM beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, including additional guidance for CDM and World Language proficiency level outcomes. For more information on this update, see the Back-to-School Update memorandum

Stakeholders supporting the GLE and the CDM process may also want to review the World Language Course Codes for CDM and explore how such an opportunity supports NC's Portrait of a Graduate, which identifies seven competencies that students should possess upon graduation from high school to help them thrive in the 21st century.

For more information, please visit the NCDPI webpages for the CDM process and/or NC’s Portrait of a Graduate.
