Charter Schools Advisory Board Highlights

CSAB Basics

  • CSAB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSAB meeting is April 11 at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSAB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page
  • CSAB action items are heard the following month at State Board of Education meetings. Those meeting agendas are also found on Eboard.

Reports

Renewals Update

After tabling the vote in February, the CSAB discussed charter renewal for Next Generation Academy(41M) and Invest Collegiate Transform (60Q). Ms. Shirley McFadden provided financial analysis of the two schools. Next Generation Academy was unanimously recommended for a three-year renewal with stipulations. Invest Collegiate Transform was unanimously recommended for non-renewal. These recommendations will move to SBE in April for discussion.

North Carolina PEPSC

Dr. Van Dempsey, Dean, Watson College of Education at UNC Wilmington and chair of the Professional Educator Preparation and Standards Commission (PEPSC) presented on the NC Pathways to Excellence for Teaching Professionals. The presentation included updates on licensure levels I-IV and information about piloting of the new compensation model. The CSAB asked clarifying questions specific to student impact, charter flexibility and salary determinants.

Amendments

Ms. Ashley Baquero presented two amendment requests. The CSAB unanimously approved a mission statement amendment for United Community School(61K). The CSAB unanimously approved the enrollment increase amendment for North Carolina Virtual Academy (00B). The two amendments will move forward to SBE in April.

OCS Updates

 

The Office of Charter Schools provided Ready to Open updates for upcoming school openings and requested delays.

 

NC ACCESS provided updates specific to current staffing levels and a recent  no-cost grant extension. Dr. Barbara O'Neal, NC ACCESS Program Administrator, provided available cash figures, sub grantee updates, and other program offerings related to the five-year CSP grant.

 

Ms. Ashley Baquero provided updates on SBE votes, staffing, calendar and intra-agency data sharing.
