Above And Beyond SSW: Cathy Waugh, Person County Schools

cathy

The NC Homeless Education Program (NCHEP) has selected Ms. Catharine Waugh as the Homeless Liaison of the Year for the state of North Carolina.

Ms. Waugh serves as the McKinney-Vento Liaison, ESSA Foster Care Point of Contact (POC), and School Social Work Coordinator for the Person County Schools. She was chosen for her endless dedication and commitment to serving one of our most vulnerable populations of students, her passion for education, and her mission for the overall success of students in school. Ms. Waugh is highly regarded as a school social worker and homeless liaison by her colleagues, and is viewed as a model leader at the local and state level.

Thank you & congratulations, Cathy!

Alamance-Burlington School Social Work Week Celebration

It was their first in-person gathering since 2020. Organized by Lead School Social Worker Kimberly Yarborough, the goal was to recognize the important work social workers do every day, in connection with National School Social Work Week.  View more here.

Fun Fact

Mrs. Tara Oliver was my undergraduate internship supervisor from nearly 17 years ago.  She came out of retirement to work on the ABSS team because her heart is still set on supporting students and families.  I credit my career to the teachings and leading of this legendary school social worker.

ABSS and all of her community work zone is lucky to have her!

A HUGE THANK YOU, Mrs. Oliver.

SSW Celebration: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

And the winner is...

CMS Brown

Candice Brown

Palisades High School

CMS Brown

Nominated by Alyse Pearson, Asst. Principal, Dr. Donna Smith-Hogan, Lead Psychologist & Rachel Brand, Student Services Dept. Chair

"I cannot say enough amazing things about Ms. Brown. This is our first year as a school (her first year working in high school, she is a veteran social worker in CMS) and she started off running with the fast-paced flow of high school. She has traveled around trying to locate students who were no shows during the first 10 days of school, she has made connections with the community to support our students in need of clothing, food, and basic supplies. She has continued to work with families when students are struggling academically and learning about various alternative options for academics.

She always has a smile on her face, students are drawn to her and are always seeking her out. Our main office and admin team continuously calls for her on the radio for families that stop by, and she is always willing to drop what she is doing to meet with families or staff members. She is our go-to person when our counseling team was down to only two people. She never says “sorry, that is out of my job description”, instead it is “do you think I can support in any way?” Our school would not run the way it does if we did not have Ms. Candice Brown as our School Social Worker. I couldn’t think of anyone else that could top the amazingness of her!"

CONGRATULATIONS Candice!!!
