Feature Resource: Counselor Advising and Scheduling Tips (CAST) for Arts Education

Lunch and Learn March 15 from 12-12:30

The Counselor Advising and Scheduling Tips (CAST) for Arts Education Lunch & Learn is designed to guide school counselors and other course advisors in understanding North Carolina Arts Education programs, course codes, options, best practices, resources, etc., so that these educators can be best equipped to advise students on what courses to take to align with their future aspirations. We will specifically address the unique nature of these mastery-based standards, whether students can repeat the same course code (they can) and how to navigate the inherently honors structure with students of varying levels all in the same ensemble. Although this content is most relevant for high school counselors, any other school personnel are welcome to participate.

Arts Ed Teachers, Counselors, Data Administrators, and Administrators are ALL welcome to ensure alignment on how the Mastery-Based SCOS and Arts Ed Course Codes should be utilized when enrolling students.

FYI: H136 Would Create an Arts Proficiency Endorsement For NC High School Diplomas

On February 15th Rep. Jeffrey Elmore, (Wilkes County Visual Art Teacher) along with Arts Caucus Chairs Rep. Becky Carney and Rep. Kyle Hall, filed H136, which would create an Arts Proficiency Endorsement for High School Diplomas in North Carolina. The endorsement would be awarded to those graduates who have completed at least four arts credits with an average GPA of 3.0 or higher and participated in at least 40 hours of extra-curricular arts activities.

Utilizing the LIS in Arts Education Webinar

First we heard about LETRS

Then we were given the Literacy Instructional Standards (LIS)

HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO NAVIGATE ALL OF THIS AND TEACH OUR STANDARDS?

Looking for Literacy CEUs that actually relate to Arts Education?

Utilizing Literacy Instructional Standards in Arts Education Banner. March 16 3:45-5pm. Receive Literacy CEUs

Need Literacy CEUs?

On October 7, 2021, the North Carolina State Board of Education approved the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) as outlined in Section V of SB 387: Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021. The LIS serve as a framework for the development and alignment of curriculum and instruction for all public schools. These standards are defined as a level of quality and equity to be used consistently within core literacy instruction statewide. While the NC Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) sets student expectations, the LIS and their associated instructional practices set expectations for teaching literacy.  The LIS are organized by grade-band and can be used to ensure that all teachers across North Carolina have a common understanding and delivery of literacy instruction.

While the LIS have been developed by grade bands, they should be used in tandem with appropriate grade-level texts of increasing complexity in order for students to fully meet the demands of the NCSCOS. This session will specifically address Literacy within both the elementary and secondary classrooms in Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts.

This webinar will be the beginning of a PD series specifically designed to address Literacy Processes Inherent to Arts Education - All for Literacy Credit!

Artist Year Banner

ArtistYear - the first AmeriCorps program dedicated to the arts - trains exceptional artists across all creative disciplines to serve full-time in schools that receive Title I funding to address inequities in arts education across the nation. ArtistYear's vision is to democratize access to creative learning so those served may reap the academic benefits, critical-thinking skills and social-emotional growth that come through creative engagement.

Throughout the first semester of the school year, ArtistYear’s AmeriCorps Members served their students through creative and arts learning opportunities! Students at ArtistYear’s service sites have been excited to dive into new projects - and ArtistYear’s Members have been equally excited to continue building arts programming for them. In Lee County Schools, ArtistYear’s Members created and implemented new school-wide arts initiatives, including a Creative Cafe, Photography Clubs, and new Theatre Club. Members serving schools in Moore County have introduced and co-led a student-produced school news video series, guided art students through lessons on folk art and pottery, and started a Creative Writing Club.

In December, the North Carolina Outdoor Heritage Advisory Council announced their Go Outside Grant recipients, which included second-year ArtistYear Member McKelynn Barber. McKelynn applied for the grant with support from her principal, Dante Poole, to secure funds to create a multipurpose, outdoor learning space at Aberdeen Elementary - a project McKelynn began planning during her first service year. McKelynn shares, "This outdoor classroom is more than a space for learning and discovery. It represents the investment of Aberdeen Elementary in giving our students the best opportunities and resources we can."

ArtistYear is a subgrantee of The North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service (VolunteerNC); funding from VolunteerNC makes ArtistYear programming in North Carolina possible. ArtistYear also receives funds from AmeriCorps, the Agency - the federal agency connecting individuals and organizations to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges.

If you would like further information on how to bring an ArtistYear RTA into your school please contact the North Carolina Lead, Eugene Cottrell at eugene.cottrell@artistyear.org.
