Monthly Standards Update -- 22-23 SY 8th Issue

In March 2021, the North Carolina State Board of Education unanimously approved the 2020 ELD Standard Course of Study (SCOS) for implementation in the 2022-2023 school year.  

In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Initial Implementation phase, the NCDPI ML/Title III Team provides monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELD SCOS. These updates are sent every first Tuesday of the month.

New Resource Available: Understanding the ELD Standards Canvas Course

This Canvas course is directed to those interested in learning about the NC English Language Development (ELD) Standard Course of Study.  This course provides an overview as well as an in-depth, close reading of the standards.  The course includes:

• the framework and organization of the NC ELD Standard Course of Study

• the connections between the NC ELD standards and the NC content standards of English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies

• the impact of the major revisions to the adopted standards

• how to use the NC ELD Standard Course of Study in planning units

A great resource for beginning and lateral entry educators--and even veteran educators!  *Note: This is a public Canvas course; users do not need a Canvas account to access this course.

Professional Learning ELD Support Team Spring PD Series The ELD Support Team, sponsored by the ML/Title III Team, is offering state-wide professional learning on various North Carolina ML Initiatives and the NC ELD Standard Course of Study, including SIOP, ExC-ELL, GLAD, and Family & Community Engagement. These sessions are open to K-12 educators.   Register now!

Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) Learning Series

Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, there will be a series of professional learning involving multiple content areas.  The LIS are to be used by all teachers in every content area for core instruction.  This series will focus on integrating the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) into standards-aligned content area instruction. These sessions are open to K-12 educators.
