ELD Standards/Instructional Practices

Collaborating: NCDPI ML IHE Committee

In 2020, a group of Institute of Higher Education (IHE)/University professors began meeting to determine ways to increase a collective focus on common needs of multilingual learners (MLs). These professors also served on various NCDPI committees and began to see the power of the collaboration with NCDPI, leading to a formal request to NCDPI to host the NCDPI ML IHE Committee.

The committee quickly grew as the initial 4 members shared the collaborative opportunity with colleagues. As of January, 2023, the more than 25 members represent 14 unique IHEs.

Get Involved with the ML Success Grant

The “Strategies and Innovations for Multilingual Learner Success” (or ML Success) project is underway! Through this project, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) and NCDPI team members aim for:

  1. identifying schools that demonstrate success in supporting multilingual learners (MLs)’ academic development
  2. exploring strategies and innovations that contribute to the success for ML learning
  3. summarizing lessons learned and offering recommendations to inform ML-focuses policies and practices

Over the next 2 years, the team will collect and analyze data, as well as make recommendations to positively impact ML education. The project will invite 8 researchers from Institutions of Higher Education and 24 educators from K-12 schools to participate in the research team. Research team members will:

Manuelita Cardona

Educator Spotlight

Join us in celebrating Mrs. Manuelita Cardona from the ESL Academy at Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy. The ESL Academy is a program for newcomers that runs from 6th - 9th grade with students that come from different places around the world and speak different languages and dialects (e.g. Dari, Kinyarwanda, Pashto, Arabic, and Spanish). Mrs. Cardona is an innovative and dedicated ESL/Science teacher who is making a real impact in her language classroom by integrating science and technology.

Through the integration of coding, Mrs. Cardona has created a project-based learning experience that allows her students to collaborate and develop problem-solving skills. Her students work in teams to design a project that showcases their understanding of the science concepts they are learning and the language structures they have been practicing.

One of the most remarkable things is her ability to connect with her students and create a learning environment that is empowering her MLs to use language and content. She encourages her students to take risks and make mistakes with the purpose of using language meaningfully.

Take a look at this video recording of Mrs. Cardona’s class (used with permission) working on their projects. You may contact her at mcardona@wsfcs.k12.nc.us for further information about the classroom resources and materials she utilized, and her collaboration with the IT specialists in her school.
