The NC Standard Course of Study calls for the teaching of North Carolina Arts, Artists, and the way the culture has been affected by the arts of our state. Created through a partnership with the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, the Teaching North Carolina Arts Project is for NC teachers to teach about NC artistic styles, genres, and artists to satisfy the Culture, Connecting, and Cultural Relevancy standards, specifically about North Carolina in grades 4 and 8.

The Teaching North Carolina Arts Project connects teachers and students with information from other state agencies about NC Artists and included lesson resources from NC educators.

Arts In Our Schools Month - Applications are Open to be Featured at NCDPI!

NC Arts In Our Schools Month banner on quilted background

NCDPI would like to continue our beloved tradition where school groups share their favorite music, dance, theatre, spoken word, and art with NCDPI staff, friends, and family. To celebrate this year, we want to showcase the best and brightest of our student artists in-person at the NCDPI Education Building in Raleigh.

Performance slots are T, W, Th of March at 11:30 am

Please try to keep these things in mind

  • 15-20 minute performance length
  • Please begin your performance with an introduction including a brief bio of the featured students. In addition, we love to hear what standards you are focusing on in this submission! VISUAL ART GALLERIES should also submit a video introduction along with their gallery (instructions below):
  • VISUAL ART galleries can be submitted in a virtual gallery. These should be in a single Google Slide Deck per school. On each slide should be a student's artwork, their name, and their grade level. You can share the link in the appropriate box below. (If you do not have access to Google Slides, please contact us for another solution!)
  • Virtual Performances are welcome from those ensembles unable to travel. Contact us for further instructions.
  • The performance should reflect the NC Arts Education Essential Standards. Highlighting the standards in the performance also makes a huge impact!
  • We love seeing performances which represent the diversity and linguistic heritage of your students
  • Feel free to bring along your administrators so we can thank them for supporting Arts Education!
  • We will plan to livestream your performance at 11:30am on the appointed day. In order to do so, we need a NCDPI Media Release Form from every student in the ensemble submitted one week before your performance.
  • Please let us know directly if any students in your ensemble are NOT allowed to be videotaped or photographed. This will help us as we plan our promotional material, and the best way to feature your group to our online audiences on your performance day.

Utilizing the LIS in Arts Education Webinar

Utilizing Literacy Instructional Standards in Arts Education Banner. March 16 3:45-5pm. Receive Literacy CEUs

Need Literacy CEUs?

On October 7, 2021, the North Carolina State Board of Education approved the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) as outlined in Section V of SB 387: Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021. The LIS serve as a framework for the development and alignment of curriculum and instruction for all public schools. These standards are defined as a level of quality and equity to be used consistently within core literacy instruction statewide. While the NC Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) sets student expectations, the LIS and their associated instructional practices set expectations for teaching literacy.  The LIS are organized by grade-band and can be used to ensure that all teachers across North Carolina have a common understanding and delivery of literacy instruction.

While the LIS have been developed by grade bands, they should be used in tandem with appropriate grade-level texts of increasing complexity in order for students to fully meet the demands of the NCSCOS. This session will specifically address Literacy within both the elementary and secondary classrooms in Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts.

This webinar will be the beginning of a PD series specifically designed to address Literacy Processes Inherent to Arts Education - All for Literacy Credit!

NC Arts Council Grants Now Open!

Arts in Education Residency Grant: This category is designed to give schools and school districts funding to bring artists into the classroom, either virtually or in person, for a residency during the fall semester of 2023 or spring semester of 2024. Grant funding supports standards-based, long-term (5 days and longer) artist residencies that provide students with the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and skills in the arts. Educators and artists collaborate to design an artist residency that meets the specific needs of the school and engages students in hands-on, participatory arts learning. At a minimum, artists work with the same group of students for 5 days during the residency. Residency days and weeks do not have to be consecutive. Grant amounts range between $5,000 - $15,000. Schools based in Tier 2 and Tier 3 counties are required to provide a cash match, but this match may include teacher’s and school administrator’s time with planning and facilitating the artist residency program. Schools based in Tier 1 counties are not required to provide a cash match.

cARTwheels Grant Program: The North Carolina Arts Council is excited to reintroduce cARTwheels, an Arts in Education Grant Program which provides high quality arts performances and residency experiences for students and schools. For this new iteration of the program, cARTwheels will focus on building students’ resiliency through the arts. In-school performances and arts experiences will focus on creative practices and programmatic content that support students’ problem-solving skills and promote healing, reflection, and self-empowerment through the arts.

Portrait of a Graduate Exemplar Collection

The NCDPI Office of Innovation is interested in showcasing exemplars of the Portrait of a Graduate Competencies as an extension of the Promising Practices Clearinghouse, and we are hoping each of  you will be able to assist in collecting these exemplars.

The Portrait of a Graduate identifies seven competencies that North Carolina students should possess upon graduation from high school to help them thrive in the 21st century.

  • Adaptability
  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Critical Thinking
  • Empathy
  • Learner's Mindset
  • Personal Responsibility
  NC Portrait of a Graduate

NCDPI is seeking to spotlight these competencies from various perspectives, such as leaders being collaborative, teachers being critical thinkers, students being adaptable, etc. We are especially interested in student-based exemplars, as we would like to embed those in the Portrait of a Graduate Playbook once the assets (infographics, videos, photos, etc.) are available.

This information is being collected on the Portrait of a Graduate Exemplars Google form from all Public School Units (PSUs) or districts, charter schools, and lab schools.

Please direct any questions to Dr. Angie Mullennix, Director of Innovative Practices and Programs, at Angie.Mullennix@dpi.nc.gov.

Note: The NCDPI Office of Innovation intern, Hayden Kelley, will be assisting on this project and may be in further contact with you or those who make submissions, as our intention is to collect the information via the form then reach back out to the submitter and inquire further via virtual meeting and/or conduct a site visit.

All Stakeholders Standard-by-Standard Survey

Attention Exclamation Mark inside a dark blue triangle in a pink circle

Deadline at 5:00 pm on January 20

In August, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Office of Academic Standards’ team kicked off the review phase for K-12 Arts Standards.  This cohort of standards will follow the NC Standard Course of Study Manual in terms of process and timeline.

Per the Internal Procedures Manual, the review phase consists of data collection and analysis, as well as research.  The NCDPI team is seeking input on the current K-12 Arts standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies.

These surveys are being shared to gather thoughtful input and comments from stakeholders familiar with the Arts, Guidance, and/or World Language Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards.

Any individual who wishes to provide input on the Standard Course of Study may complete this survey.  This survey is estimated to take about 10 to 20 minutes to complete, depending on how many grades or courses you choose to review.

We thank you for your time and input. Your feedback is extremely valuable to the standards review and revision process.
