NCDPI's Office of Academic Standards serves as the authoritative source for the review, revision, and support for the implementation of state content standards in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (SCOS).
During the 2022 - 2023 school year, three content areas (Arts Education, Guidance, and World Languages) will be in the review phase as outlined on pages 11 - 17 in the North Carolina SCOS Internal Procedures Manual.

DEADLINE EXTENSION
In August, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Office of Academic Standards’ team kicked off the review phase for K-12 Arts Standards. This cohort of standards will follow the NC Standard Course of Study Manual in terms of process and timeline.
Per the Internal Procedures Manual, the review phase consists of data collection and analysis, as well as research. The NCDPI team is seeking input on the current K-12 Arts standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies.

These surveys are being shared to gather thoughtful input and comments from stakeholders familiar with the Arts, Guidance, and/or World Language Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards.
Any individual who wishes to provide input on the Standard Course of Study may complete this survey. This survey is estimated to take about 10 to 20 minutes to complete, depending on how many grades or courses you choose to review.

 DEADLINE EXTENSION
State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) will formally collect feedback on the current standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies. In August, the NCDPI Office of Academic Standards’ team kicked off the review phase for K-12 Arts, K-12 Guidance, and K-12 World Language Standards. This cohort of standards will follow the NC Standard Course of Study Manual in terms of process and timeline.
As a part of the process, we have created a PSU feedback survey. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from each PSU on the K-12 Arts, K-12 Guidance, and K-12 World Language Standard Course of Study (SCOS) in order to inform revision decisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards.
The NCDPI team requests your thoughtful input and comments on the current academic standards for K-12 Arts, K-12 Guidance, and K-12 World Languages to inform the review and revision process. Please connect with the respective district leader, as applicable, for each area in order to convene a review team consisting of educators in your PSU familiar with the SCOS for the Arts, Guidance, and World Languages.
This survey is estimated to take about 30-45 minutes to complete, depending on how you choose to deploy within your PSU. We thank you for your time and input. Your feedback is extremely valuable to the standards revision process.

DEADLINE EXTENSION
The application deadline for the K-12 Arts Standards Data Review Committees (DRC) has been extended through Friday, January 20, 2023. DRC members review the data collected and compiled from Standard-by-Standard surveys, regional focus groups, and interviews, as well as research, policies, and legislation.
Note: The DRC analyzes the feedback and makes recommendations that help drive both the review and revision phases, so individuals chosen for the DRC cannot serve on the Standards Writing Team (SWT) that is convened during the revision phase.
The DRC will consist of a range of external stakeholders, including: K-12 educators, educational leaders, university professors, content professionals, experts from partner organizations, and community members. The DRC members will be chosen from across the state’s eight regions and represent varying perspectives and experiences regarding the current Standard Course of Study for these areas.

- DRC compiles feedback for SWT
- SWT creates Draft 2 and general feedback survey used for input
- DRC compiles feedback for SWT
- SWT creates Draft 3 to present to SBE for discussion and approval
Installation Phase: 2024 - 2025
- New standards provided to all stakeholders
- NCDPI prepares statewide professional development
- PSUs develop plans for rollout of new standards in local curriculum
Initial Implementation Phase: 2025 - 2026
- New standards used in all K-12 classrooms
- PSU rollout of local training and curriculum writing
- NCDPI facilitates statewide training with materials and support documents for new standards
Full Implementation Phase: 2026 - 2027 and beyond
- Professional development at state and local levels expanded and shared with lessons learned
- NCDPI and PSUs collaborate to identify and address needs
- Annual needs assessment survey deployed to collect data on implementation and future needs
