International Education Week is
November 14-18, 2022

Global Education remains a priority in North Carolina. At its core, global education is about enabling young people to participate in shaping a better, shared future for the world. The International Education Week 2022 (IEW) (November 14-18) is an opportunity for students and educators to celebrate the benefits of education and exchange worldwide. It promotes programs and opportunities that are preparing students for a global environment.

In 2019, the State Board of Education first recognized the third week of November as International Education Week in North Carolina. Each year since then, there have been opportunities across the state that offer the chance to:

  • Expand awareness of and interest in global issues and global learning
  • Collaborate with and learn from international student or educator groups and organizations
  • Gain a new cultural understanding
  • Share how North Carolina students and educators are globally competent and aware

  • Sample a small part of life beyond the shores of America

Be sure to use the hashtags: #NCIEW, #NCisGlobal, #IEW2021, and #SettingtheStandard

NCDPI IEW Student Showcase

During the month of November, we invite you to submit student work and voices as part of North Carolina’s celebration of International Education Week.

International Education Week (IEW) is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. International Education Week offers the chance to expand awareness of and interest in global education, and to gain a new cultural understanding by sampling a small part of life beyond the shores of America. A variety of IEW activities are being planned by NCDPI to promote International Education Week in North Carolina during the week of Nov. 13-18, 2022.

The NCDPI IEW Student Showcase is a great way for students to demonstrate their global competency! It provides them an opportunity to share their interest and understanding of global issues, global learning, and cultural awareness through various projects, presentations, or work samples.

How to involve and engage students:

This week, to kick off  International Education Week, start conversations with students about their global awareness and understandings. Students can then develop a plan of how they can inform others about what they have learned in a creative way. Student/School Performances or Presentations, Student Work Narratives, Visual or Fine Arts, Music, or Student Interviews are welcome.

Submissions will be accepted now until the end of the month. Approved submissions will be shared on the NCDPI social media pages, website, and International Education Week Hub on Canvas.

Student work samples (individual or group/class) may be submitted by educators in the following way:

Professional Development Webinars: November 14-17, 2022, from 6-7:30 p.m.

This is our fourth year celebrating International Education Week at NCDPI, as well as our fourth year partnering with the UNC-Duke Area Studies Centers to provide a professional learning series on global education. Like us, our collaborative partners seek to ensure that educators in North Carolina are globally engaged, aware, competent, and responsive.

The Area Studies Centers at UNC and Duke partner with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to offer globally-focused professional development during International Education Week (IEW). International Education Week, held in November annually, is a national week of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education that celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

As we see conflicts arising all over the world, it is important to recognize and celebrate the resilience of different societies in the face of challenges. To mark International Education Week 2022, the UNC Area Studies Centers and the NC Department of Public Instruction will host a series of events for educators on the theme of “Resilience in the Face of Conflict.” Through the series, teachers can learn about specific challenges facing societies in different parts of the world and how people have responded to assert their own humanity, protect their cultures, and uplift their communities.

Each session will highlight content and resources related to a different world region: Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Attending educators will receive content and resources to equip students with the critical thinking skills and global perspective necessary to solve challenges of the future.

Recognizing Global Ready Districts and Global Education Digital Badge Earners

Words of Wisdom from Global Educator Digital Badge and Global Ready Earners

The Global Educator Digital Badge (GEDB) provides an opportunity for educators to focus their professional development on developing their own global context and understanding of how to integrate global education throughout curricula. It also provides the opportunity to build global competency in students.

The Global Ready designations are for schools and districts that have made the development of global competence and global awareness a regular part of their daily work. The process of achieving the recognition requires that schools and districts demonstrate that they are either PREPARED or MODEL according to the Global Ready rubrics.

Each day of International Education Week 2022, we will be highlighting some educators who have earned the NCDPI Global Educator Digital Badge (GEDB) on Twitter. The earners will be sharing their thoughts on the benefits of getting the badge and how it has impacted their teaching.

For more information on the Badge (SBE Policy, FAQs, Process Flyer, Implementation Guide, MOA), please visit the website or contact NCGlobalEducation@dpi.nc.gov.

November is Veterans' History Awareness Month in North Carolina

On June 28, 2017, Governor Roy Cooper signed into law, An Act To Establish Veterans’ History Awareness Month In November. The intent of this law is to enable students to gain a better understanding of the meaning and importance of the contributions of American veterans and veterans from North Carolina. The North Carolina State Board of Education (NC SBE) is tasked with identifying recommended programs that schools can use during Veterans’ History Awareness Month.

Did you know that North Carolina is the 4th largest state in the nation in the number of school-aged military dependents of active-duty personnel? North Carolina is also home to over a quarter-million children of military retirees or veterans in every county in the state. Currently, there are more than 22 million Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Let us all thank and honor them in November.

For more information and to access additional resources, please view the Veterans' History Awareness Month flyer to help you and your students honor veterans. They can be used during this Veterans’ History Awareness Month or throughout the year.

The Russian Flagship Program  provides students of all majors the unique opportunity to gain a professional level of Russian language proficiency as well as tangible work experience in their field of interest through coursework at UNC and an overseas Capstone year in Kazakhstan. It is one of eight Russian Language Flagship programs in the US-sponsored by the National Security Education Program as part of The Language Flagship, a national initiative aimed to change the way Americans learn languages.

The goal of the Russian Flagship Program is for participating students to:

  • Reach a professional level of competency in Russian, a language deemed “critical” to national security
  • Link their language study to the major(s) of their choice
  • Study abroad and complete a professional overseas internship
  • Receive scholarships for study abroad, intensive summer language courses, and related professional development opportunities

Contact Meredith Doubleday, Assistant Director of the Russian Flagship Program, to learn more about ways high school students can get involved with the program as well as opportunities for virtual programming by Flagship Student Ambassadors in Social Studies classrooms.
