Welcome

Welcome to the new monthly format for the DL/I Discourse! With over 240 Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I) programs in North Carolina, touting the benefits and promoting DL/I in NC has been an easy task which has brought several new opportunities to engage and work with more educators in the field, including:

  • Partnering with the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) on a USED Competitive Grant for State Assessments to design new assessments to create an e-portfolio that draws from multiple measures and sources to assess student academic achievement
  • A new DL/I in NC Committee comprised of 28 educators from 21 Public School Units and 3 IHEs
  • A visual version of the DL/I Program Directory of all DL/I programs and contacts in North Carolina
The NCDPI DL/I Team has created this issue of the DL/I Discourse to help educators learn more about the opportunities above and the great work happening across our state.

The importance of language learning could not be more clear. DL/I can benefit students’ success in school, post-secondary endeavors, and brain development while also expanding students’ world views and understanding of other cultures.

Our present world is multilingual and students need to learn to navigate its linguistic and cultural borders. One of the best ways to help our students prepare for this is through DL/I programs.

Collaboration and Networking for DL/I Discourse

Collaboration & Networking

DL/I in NC Committee for 2022 - 2024

The Dual Language/Immersion in North Carolina (DL/I in NC) Committee - previously known as the DL/I Advisory Board - is a K-20 group representing DL/I programs from across the state. The members of this group are selected based on an application process that is done every two years. This committee has the opportunity to share their expertise and collaborate with the NCDPI DL/I Team and other educators across the state.

Jobs in the DL/I Discourse

Job Listings

Where can DL/I jobs in North Carolina be posted or found?

  • Advertise or search for positions on TeachNC, the statewide K-12 job board, at northcarolina.teach.org/jobs, which allows NC public school units (PSUs), districts and charters, to find teachers, administrators, support staff, etc. TeachNC integrates with the applicant tracking systems in place at PSUs so that, as jobs are posted, they receive immediate exposure.
  • Request that FLANC add them to their Job Opportunities page at www.flanc.org/news/jobs and/or the FLANC Facebook group. The FLANC webmasters are listed at www.flanc.org/about/contact
  • List them with one or more of the national groups, such as ACTFL, that include job opportunities in their newsletters.
