Frances Bryant Bradburn Distinguished Service Award

At NCSLMA’s recent conference, the association recognized Kathy Parker’s contributions to NCSLMA and school library media programs statewide with the Frances Bryant Bradburn Distinguished Service Award. Kathy is honored to serve the school library media community as they lead their students and teachers in technology integration, literacy, equitable access to resources, and more! School library media coordinators and their services improve teacher effectiveness and make their students’ lives better every day.

New Self-Paced PD Courses for Canvas

Digital Teaching and Learning is excited to share two new self-paced professional development courses on the LMS, Canvas. The Growing with Canvas course is a “Level 1” introduction to all things Canvas. Educators more familiar with the LMS can utilize the Diving Deeper with Canvas course for specific training on personalized learning, feedback, and course design. NC DL Initiative

Technology Human Capacity Workgroup

 

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Office of Digital Teaching and Learning would like to support the field with research and best practices around their technology personnel. To do this, the office of Digital Teaching and Learning is putting together a workgroup to research, curate, and share a report about the human side of the technology department. Each region will be represented by 2 individuals, one technology director and one technology staff member. 

Workgroup members will:

  • Participate in monthly meetings that take place from 4:00-5:30pm on:
    • Tuesday, December 6
    • Tuesday, January 10
    • Thursday, February 9
    • Tuesday, March 14
    • Wednesday, April 19
    • Tuesday, May 16
  • Read, find, an summarize research around K-12 technology departments
  • Collaborate with others in their region to better understand their current structures for their technology department
  • Collaborate with others in their region to better understand gaps in human capacity for technology departments
  • Analyze DLMI data
  • Create documentation to support the field with technology team structures, pay-scales, job descriptions, etc. 

A $1,000 stipend will be provided to workgroup members. 

Anyone interested in this opportunity should fill out this application no later than November 21st. Please note that these will be reviewed blind and participants will be chosen according to their responses to the questions provided.

Digital Learning Initiative Planning Workshops

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Office of Digital Teaching and Learning will be holding 2 day workshops to support Public School Units with aligning to the updated North Carolina Digital Learning Plan.

Participants will:

  • Complete their PSU Digital Learning Progress Rubric. 
  • Use Digital Learning Progress Rubric Data and Digital Learning Media Inventory Data to identify areas for growth.
  • Create plans for growth for Digital Teaching and Learning.
  • Learn about grant funding (through the Digital Learning Initiative and other outside sources) that can be utilized to support plans for growth. 

Dates: (4 dates will be available)

  • January 9-10
  • January 11-12
  • January 17-18
  • January 19-20

Attendance and cost:

  • PSUs can send a team of 2-4 individuals to the 2 day workshop.
  • The Digital Learning Initiative will pay for hotel accommodations for team members attending the workshop.
  • PSUs will be responsible for travel and food costs that participants will incur. 

Location:

  • All workshops will take place at Drury Inn & Suites Burlington | Address: 1767 Glidewell Dr, Burlington, NC 27215

Teams interested in participating should fill out the application no later than November 21st. Applicants will be notified no later than December 1st of the dates they are accepted to attend.

Digital Learning Competencies Update

 

The Digital Teaching and Learning Team is looking to establish  4 working groups to provide input and feedback on the updated North Carolina Digital Learning Competencies for Teachers, Administrators, Coaches, and School Library Media Specialists. The purpose of these groups is to review proposed revisions to the Digital Learning Competencies and suggest needed changes. These work groups have been strategically designed to capture the perspectives of all stakeholders who work and are impacted by the DLCs. 

Individuals who are selected will need to be available to meet once a month virtually. Each group will meet from 4:30-5:30pm using the following schedule:

 

Teacher Workgroup:

  • December 8
  • January 19
  • February 23
  • March 30
  • April 27

Administrator Workgroup:

  •  December 1
  • January 12
  • February 16
  • March 16
  • April, 20

Coaches Workgroup

  • December 13
  • January 17
  • February 21
  • March 28
  • April 18

School Library Media Specialist Workgroup

  • December 12
  • January 23 
  • February 20
  • March 27
  • April 17 

Each work group team will be made up of two representatives from each of the 8 regions and team members will be provided with a $500 stipend for their work.
