NCDPI and NC Collaboratory Address COVID's Impact on Student Learning

"The N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and North Carolina Collaboratory are leading a joint $6.73 million effort to spur research on the impact of COVID-19 on student learning in the state, with the goal of helping educators and students recover from pandemic-related disruptions and lost instructional time.

Based on priorities identified by NCDPI’s Office of Learning Recovery and Acceleration (OLR), the partnership will fund 20 academic research teams across North Carolina to understand the effectiveness of existing state and local programs and policies that were supported through federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) legislation."

NC Early Mathematics Placement Testing Program (NC EMPT)

The NC Early Mathematics Placement Testing Program (NC EMPT) serves all high school students statewide. Sponsored by the State of North Carolina, this early intervention program is designed to offer valuable foresight into students’ college and career readiness in mathematics before post-secondary plans are materialized. Participation in this low-maintenance service remains free of charge to NC high school teachers.

Eligible students include those enrolled in NC Math 3, Algebra II, and any fourth-level math course. Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 testing are now available with four testing windows.

Alamance-Burlington School System Counselor Named 2023 School Counselor of the Year Finalist

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) has announced Meredith Draughn from B. Everett Jordan Elementary School in Alamance-Burlington Schools as one of five finalists for the 2023 School Counselor of the Year awards program!

The award honors exemplary school counseling professionals who devote their careers to serving as advocates for the nation’s students, helping them achieve success in school and in life. ASCA will announce the 2023 School Counselor of the Year in late fall.

In-Person Professional Development Opportunity for Grades 6-12 Educators

This free professional development event begins with dinner followed by a screening of HARRIET TUBMAN: VISIONS OF FREEDOM at Tryon Palace in New Bern. Following the screening, PBS North Carolina’s Deborah Holt Noel will lead a discussion about North Carolina's unique role in the Underground Railroad. There will be time for Q & A and participants will receive a certificate of completion for 2.5 credit hours.

NCDPI Seeks Public Input on K-12 Arts, Guidance and World Language Standards

State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction will formally collect feedback on current standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies. The purpose of these surveys is to obtain input from educators and stakeholders  in order to inform revision decisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards

N.C. State Scholarship Aims to Grow More Teachers in Eastern North Carolina

"N.C. State University has a new scholarship that could help address persistent teacher shortages in eastern North Carolina.

The Transformational Scholarship provides $40,000 toward tuition at N.C. State's College of Education over four years to students from eastern North Carolina who intend to return to that region to teach.

This fall, the university welcomed a group of 16 undergraduate students who are studying to be teachers with the help of the scholarship."

Three NC Educators Selected as Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Outstanding Teachers for 2022-23

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) educators play an immeasurable role in the work to prepare students for college, career, and beyond. Each year, PLTW honor outstanding PLTW teachers and administrators through the National PLTW Teachers and PLTW Administrator of the Year awards.

• Jon Hidalgo and David Humpries, educators at the Central Academy of Technology and Arts, were recognized as outstanding engineering teachers.
• Ahnie Ingram, an educator at the Triangle Math and Science Academy, was recognized as an outstanding biomedical science teacher
