September/October Update
Greetings from the NCDPI K-12 Science Team,
The process of reviewing and revising the 2009 K-12 Science Standards continues to move forward. The process is guided by the NCSCOS Internal Manual approved by the State Board of Education in February, 2022.
The Data Review Committee (DRC) has finalized its initial data review from all of the interviews, surveys, focus groups and research of science standards from multiple other states and internationally. The report will be provided to the Standards Writing Team(SWT), which will meet in mid-October to begin their first draft of revised standards.
The SWT consists of classroom teachers from across the State as well as instructional coaches and colleagues from institutes of higher education. The SWT will be working on their first draft through October and mid-November, with the goal of releasing a first draft mid-November.
The first draft review process will include an All-Stakeholder survey and a PSU standard-by-standard survey. The draft will be open for review for 30 days. We are asking every PSU to please have a team of reviewers ready and encourage all our constituents to participate in the All-Stakeholder survey.
The NCDPI K-12 Science Team is also excited that colleagues from the EC department have been working alongside the K-12 Science team as they work to revise their Extended Content Standards. The goal is that next summer both the core K-12 Science Standards AND Extended Content Science Standards can be approved simultaneously.
Respectfully,
