Charter Schools Advisory Board Highlights

CSAB Basics

  • CSAB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSAB meeting is October 10-11 at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSAB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page
  • CSAB action items are heard the following month at State Board of Education meetings. Those meeting agendas are also found on Eboard.

October Applicant Interviews

Standard Applicants

The Charter Schools Advisory Board heard from four standard timeline applicants in October. These applicants were seeking approval to open in Fall 2024. The CSAB recommended Flat Rock Classical Academy to the State Board of Education for Ready to Open approval. Riverside Leadership Academy and Granite State Charter Academy were invited back for a Round Two interview, to be held this December. The CSAB voted to recommend SBE denial for MINA Charter School Onslow. Approved standard applicants will go forward the State Board of Education in January.

Reports

Academic Data

Ms. Ashley Baquero, Office of Charter Schools Director, provided the 2021-22 academic data report. This report highlighted schools that exceeded growth.

 

Innovation

Ms. Rhonda Dillingham, Executive Director of the NC Association for Public Charter Schools, presented the three award winners for the inaugural Truist Shining Star Innovation Award. Apprentice Academy High School in Union County was the first place winner and received $5,000. Mr. Barry Ross, Principal of Apprentice Academy HS presented an innovative practice report to the CSAB and provided facility relocation updates. The second place winner was awarded a $2,000, and the third place winner was awarded $1,000.


NCDPI Happenings

 

The 2nd Annual AIM Conference will be held at the Raleigh Convention center October 26-29. Additional information, including registration and agenda can be found here.
