NC SciFest

Middle School SciMatch Initiative

After last year’s wildly successful virtual SciMatch initiative, we are pleased to announce that we are continuing with a hybrid edition of our program for 2023.

In April, North Carolina Scientists from all walks of life will share their love of what they do with middle schools across the state! Whether virtual or in-person, scientists will “take-over” teachers' classrooms for the day to inspire students to take on a career in science.

If you’re a middle school teacher interested in having a scientist visit with your students this April, visit https://ncsciencefestival.org/scimatch for more details and to register.

The deadline to apply is Oct 31. We’ll host a virtual orientation for the selected teachers and scientists in December and Professional Development webinars in February and March. Sign up now!

Field workshops support NGSS 3D learning, STEM, 5E and more.

With specialized tracks for elementary, middle school, and HS/AP educators, participants will:

  • Work side-by-side with scientists and researchers on citizen science projects and field studies on the ACTS Rainforest Canopy Walkway in one of the world’s most biologically diverse environments.
  • Explore conservation and sustainability via hands-on workshops with indigenous communities.
  • Spend a day in an Amazon village and explore the role of education in creating a sustainable future for Amazon children.
  • Work in grade-level cohorts to develop strategies for using the Amazon as a vehicle for incorporating standards-based inquiry, STEM, and sustainability education into the classroom.

Academy Fee of $3195 includes a pre-departure prep course, resource kit, on-site workshops & in-country land costs (air is not included).

K-12 Science Standards Revision Updates

The process of reviewing and revising the 2009 K-12 Science Standards continues to move forward. The process continues to be guided by the NCSCOS Internal Manual approved by the State Board of Education in February, 2022.  The Data Review Committee (DRC) met in early September to review all available data from surveys, interviews, focus groups and research of State-by-State Science standards, as well as national and international frameworks. The team has nearly completed their initial data review and recommendations.

The Standards Writing Team (SWT) has been finalized and will meet in mid-October to start their review of the DRC recommendations and begin a first draft of revisions. The goal is to release a first draft in mid-November for all-stakeholders, charter schools, and school systems to be able to review for up to 30 days. Please continue to look for future updates.
