As of January 2022, the NCDPI Character Education Google Site moved to a new online home on the NC Department of Public Instruction website, which is also accessible using this shortened URL: https://tinyurl.com/characternc

 

Thank you for all you do to support students, staff, families, and the community.  As you spend your time pouring into others, we encourage you to make time for self-care. 

 

This year you can share your examples of character, leadership, and service by sending photos, videos, articles, websites, etc. to Justyn.Burgess@dpi.nc.gov with a brief explanation of an activity or project that exemplifies good character. Selected exemplars will be shared in the Character Education newsletter.

School of Character Application Is Now Open 

 

Has your school or district cultivated a supportive and caring community? Do you think your staff, students, and the larger community have successfully implemented the 11 Principles of Effective Character? Apply this fall for State and National School of Character to receive valuable feedback for improvement whether you reach School of Character status this year or not.

The 2023 School of Character Application deadline is Friday, November 11, 2022.

NC Social and Emotional Learning Implementation Update

NC Social and Emotional Learning Implementation Team includes multiple voices and utilizes this space to share implementation updates across our five working groups. Check out our current work, highlights and/or future planning. Here is a quick summary of our implementation in North Carolina. This month, we are focusing on resources to strengthen adult social and emotional competencies.

Alisha sits down with Beth Rice who is a leader in North Carolina's efforts to support social and emotional learning in its schools. October is National Bullying Prevention Month

Beginning in October 2006, PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, along with the National Education Association, National PTA, American Federation for Teachers, and the National Coalition for Parent Involvement in Education, hosted the first awareness week sponsoring events and activities to raise awareness of the issue of bullying throughout the month. PACER realized that students, parents, and people throughout the country needed to become more aware of the serious consequences of bullying (stopbullying.gov).  The point of National Bullying Prevention Month is to transform a society that accepts bullying into a society that recognizes that bullying must – and can – be addressed through education and support.

KidsGardening Budding Botanist Grant - Deadline: October 14

Twenty high schools in the U.S. will receive $1,000 grants to support the development of new and expansion of existing gardens that teach students about environmental sustainability and the importance of biodiversity.

The Awesome Foundation Grants - Deadline: Ongoing

The Awesome Foundation is an ever-growing worldwide community devoted to forwarding the interest of awesome in the universe. Each local chapter supports awesome projects through micro-grants of $1,000, no strings attached, to projects and their creators, usually given out monthly.

Laws of Life Essay Contest 

 

The Laws of Life essay contest encourages middle school and high school students to reflect and write about a core value that means the most to them – and why.

 

• The program is available to all students in middle schools and high schools across the world.

• All essay writers will be recognized by Character.org. We will also recognize the most compelling essays and feature them on our website and social media channels.

 

Submissions are due March 23, 2023, and can be submitted through this online form at any time.
