NCDPI Asynchronous Workshops Extended through September 20

The 2022 Summer Professional Development (PD) for World Languages is organized into two sections as a self-paced, asynchronous workshop that will now be available through this weekend until next Tuesday, September 20.

The first section, Championing World Language Learning, utilizes a number of resources on the NCDPI World Languages Networking page. The second section, Understanding the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards (WLES), focuses on a review of each standard with details from the Administrator Guides for World Languages and the WLES Unpacking documents. This is followed by a remix of past years' World Language Webinar Series broadcasts chosen by the individual for further thinking about how to implement the WLES more effectively in their course(s) and/or program(s).

Each person who decides to participate in the 2022 Summer PD for World Languages asynchronous workshop will need to submit the Qualtrics survey at bit.ly/22SummerPDforWL by or before September 20, 2022, to earn a Certificate of Completion worth 5 contact hours or 0.5 CEU.

 

NCDPI DL/I webinars

The 2022 Summer Professional Development (PD) for Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I) is also organized into two sections as a self-paced, asynchronous workshop that will now be available through this weekend until next Tuesday, September 20.

The first section, Exploring Biliteracy, utilizes the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) Framework, specifically the TELL Planning Domain, as well as Strand 3 - Instruction in the Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education (3rd edition).

The second section, Measuring Language Growth and Academic Achievement, focuses on the TELL Learning Tools Domain and revisits the Thomas and Collier longitudinal research study materials, which are posted on the NCDPI DL/I webpage in the Additional Resources section under the Research tab.

Each person who decides to participate in the 2022 Summer PD for DL/I asynchronous workshop will need to submit the Qualtrics survey at bit.ly/22SummerPDforDLI by or before September 20, 2022 to earn a Certificate of Completion worth 3 contact hours or 0.3 CEU.

Note: Public School Units (PSUs), or districts and charter schools, must approve professional development offerings in all formats: virtual (synchronous and asynchronous), blended or hybrid, and in-person.


NC Virtual TOT2

NCVirtual’s TOT programs are FREE professional development programs for NC public and charter school teachers designed to prepare and support educators as they work in online and remote learning environments. This course, TOT2 (Teacher Online Training 2): Beyond the Basics: Online Teaching and Content Development, is a follow-up to the TOT1 Introduction course and will focus on the digital teaching and learning strategies critical to effective online teaching and content development, including:

  • Effective Instructional Design Principles
  • Differentiating for Each Online Learner
  • Exploration of Self-Selected Instructional Strategy
  • Fair Use, Creative Commons, and Open Educational Resources
    …and much more!

This course is asynchronous and facilitator-led. Participants work in cohorts of 35 - 50 educators to complete four modules within a 4-week time frame, either October 3 - 28 or November 7 - December 5 (allowing for Thanksgiving). TOT2 is designed to take 20 hours to complete, and successful completers will be issued a participation certificate for 2.0 units.

Community-Based Heritage Language Schools

Community-Based Heritage Language Schools Hybrid Conference

Online or in Washington, DC on October 7 - 8

The 9th Annual Community-Based Heritage Language Schools Conference will be available as a hybrid offering online or in-person at American University in Washington, DC, on Friday - Saturday, October 7 - 8, 2022.

French Embassy Cultural Services

Empowering French and Francophone Studies Grant Webinar

September 20 @ 2:00 - 3:00 pm ET

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy are hosting an informational webinar on Tuesday, September 20, at 2:00 - 3:00 pm Eastern to discuss the Empowering French and Francophone Studies grant competition. French Departments and programs in US colleges and universities that aim to increase enrollment in French are invited to respond to the call for proposals, which is open until October 15, 2022. Selected projects will receive a grant ranging from $2,000 to $20,000. 


Please use this registration form for the webinar, which will include an interactive Question & Answer session for prospective applicants to ask questions and get clarifications about the 2022 grant competition, including eligibility requirements and evaluation criteria.

K-12 Beginning Teacher Scholarships

Applications due September 23

The Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) has an ongoing effort to encourage new teacher attendance at the annual FLANC Fall Conference and to support the newest members of our profession. FLANC has reduced the cost for K-12 beginning teachers to attend the fall conference to only $105, which includes one year’s membership in FLANC.

 

FLANC also awards scholarships to beginning World Language teachers, including dual language/immersion (DL/I) teachers, in their first 3 years of teaching in North Carolina.These scholarships fully reimburse the $105 conference registration fee and include a ticket to one 3-hour workshop at no cost ($35 value).

The deadline for submitting the FLANC Beginning Teacher Scholarship application form is Friday, September 23, 2022.

 


SCOLT 2023

Call for Proposals

Submit by October 1

The Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT) has opened its call for proposals for SCOLT 2023, which will be held in Mobile, Alabama on March 23 - 25, 2023.

 

The theme for this year's conference is MOBILize for Language Learning, and K-20 World Language educators, current and retired, are encouraged to submit a proposal for either a 60-minute concurrent session or a 20-minute slot in a "Research to Practice" session.

 

Please see the online proposal form for additional details, and be sure to submit your proposal by Saturday, October 1, 2022.

 


UNC System

Virtual Open House

October 3 - 6 @ 6:00 - 7:00 pm ET

The University of North Carolina (UNC) System is hosting its third annual UNC System Virtual Open House for students, families, and high school counselors to learn more about the 16 UNC System universities.

 

During the week of October 3, 2022, a series of four virtual sessions will be hosted each evening, Monday - Thursday, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm Eastern. Current students from each university will share about their college experience and answer questions, which will be followed by a 30-minute Zoom session where admissions professionals can answer specific questions about the admissions process.
