The NCDPI GLE Team would like to welcome everyone to the 2022 - 2023 school year! We hope you're looking forward to sharing information with your students about earning the Global Languages Endorsement (GLE), North Carolina’s Seal of Biliteracy, which is one of five high school diploma endorsements available to graduates.
Please peruse the information below and the details about the GLE on the Global Education Recognitions page for Students that can be quickly accessed at https://bit.ly/NCSoBLGLE.
GLE Policy Requirements
The GLE is a way for students to show their multiliteracy in English and at least one World Language.
Here’s a quick review of how students can meet the requirements in each language:
More Languages on the List!
The NCDPI approved external assessment list has been updated for 2022 - 2023 and there are now over 100 languages available!
Be sure to check the list of languages if you have a student who is or has been:
- Military-connected and enrolled in school in another country during a deployment;
- Relocated from or regularly visits family or friends in another state, province, territory, or country where a language other than English is predominant;
- Attending a weekend or community heritage school where language and culture are taught;
- Participates in, or has completed, an intensive language program, such as K-5 or K-8 dual language/immersion (DL/I), English Language Development (ELD) or English as a Second Language (ESL), or a study abroad experience; and/or
- Uses a language other than English at home as a first, heritage, or native language.
These students may be able to use the external exam option to meet the World Language requirement of the GLE in the language(s) they have experience with, even if it is a less common language.
What’s New on the GLE FAQ?
The GLE Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) now has 20 questions, including #7 below about students receiving college credit for their GLE.
7. Can a student receive college credit for a GLE?
It depends. The GLE information, language(s) and proficiency level(s), are listed on the student’s transcript, and some colleges and universities have placement and/or credit policies for the Seal of Biliteracy. For example, East Carolina University’s (ECU) Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures includes the Seal of Biliteracy or GLE in its placement policy for all admitted students. Please check with the campus where the student will be attending for post-secondary study.
Be sure to check the GLE FAQ for answers you may need about the overall policy and how students in different language programs and learning environments can earn the GLE.
