Cooper Stresses Workforce Preparation, Diverse Educators in National Group Address

"North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said colleges and K-12 schools are critical to ensuring the state can fill the ranks of its many new and incoming employers. He also stressed the need to make sure students are supported on their way to being workforce-ready.

When Cooper speaks with chief executive officers of companies about their top three issues, they list, 'workforce, workforce, workforce,' he said. 'So education is going to be key for success in business.' Businesses should be classroom regulars and involved early, Cooper said."

Superintendent Truitt and NCDPI dubbed 2022 as the "Year of the Workforce" because we know how important it is to educate students on life beyond the classroom, and are happy to hear Governor Cooper echo these sentiments!

Free Music Education Workshop with NC Symphony

Music educators are invited to register for a free 5-hour workshop in Raleigh, where North Carolina educators will present curriculum-aligned materials and lessons for the Symphony’s 2022/23 Education programs.

Attendees may register to attend the workshop in person or watch a recording at a later date. Registration includes a copy of the Teacher Workbook and Student Workbook, access to the digital concert playlist, and a certificate for .5 CEU credit.

North Carolina Museum of History Field Trip Travel Grants Applications Now Open

The NC Museum of History is excited to announce funds are once again available to provide transportation assistance to schools for the 2022-23 school year! This grant program allows children from qualifying schools across the state to visit the museum in Raleigh.

While there are a variety of factors taken into account for the awarding of the funds, priority will be given to Title I and Title VII American Indian schools, schools with a high percentage of low-income or at-risk students, public schools bringing a minimum of 30 students, and schools who have not previously received grant funding from the North Carolina Museum of History. Priority will also be given to schools awarded during the 2019-20 school year whose field trip plans were canceled due to the pandemic.

This course was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team, is aligned to the NC reading and writing standards for 7th Grade ELA and includes resources for both parents and teachers.

New Resource: Connections between Science of Reading and Multilingual Learner Initiatives

A new resource is available for educators of Multilingual Learner (ML) students outlining connections between North Carolina's ML initiatives and the Science of Reading. The resource includes strategies and techniques to help build connections between content area classroom reading instruction and ESL classrooms.

District Highlight: Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools - A Boot Camp: In Intense Summer Program, Students Learn to Put on Full-Length Musical

"There was no such thing as a summer break for the 65 students in the Summer Enrichment Musical Theatre Program.

Over the course of 12 days, students in the program hustled to learn what it takes to stage a 2½-hour musical — the dialogue, the lighting, the choreography, the music, the movements, the set design."

Strategies in STEM: Engaging Students in Academic Discourse Professional Development Course

Students in the 21st century classroom need multiple opportunities to interact with content and their peers in meaningful and impactful ways. This session will provide low-prep, easy to use strategies that educators can implement in any lesson to support positive student interactions. Participants will leave with an academic discourse toolkit that will support student discussion, critical thinking, and collaborative learning.

Raleigh’s Ariana DeBose is Joining the Wake County School System’s Hall of Fame

"Award-winning performer Ariana DeBose headlines the latest class of inductees into the Wake County Public School System Hall of Fame.

The WakeEd Partnership announced Wednesday that DeBose will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for her contributions to the arts as an actress, singer and dancer. DeBose is a graduate of the Wake County school system and has won numerous awards, including the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role of Anita in 'West Side Story.'"
