Monthly Standards Update -- 22-23 SY 1st Issue

In March 2021, the North Carolina State Board of Education unanimously approved the 2020 ELD Standard Course of Study (SCOS) for implementation in the 2022-2023 school year.

In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Initial Implementation phase, the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team provides monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELD SCOS. These updates are sent every first Tuesday of the month.

Initial Implementation

This school year marks PSUs' initial implementation of the NC ELD Standard Course of Study. Our team is currently in the process of planning state-wide professional learning for the 22-23 school year. More information about state-wide professional learning will be made available via our listserv.

To request professional learning specific to your region and/or PSU, please contact your Regional Director. Should you have any standards questions or need technical assistance, please email ESLTitleIII@dpi.nc.gov.

The NCDPI ESL/Title III Team invited all educators of multilingual learners (MLs) to participate in the Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference from June 20-24. During this summer’s conference, educators had an opportunity to think deeply about the 2020 NC ELD Standard Course of Study (SCOS); to reimagine instruction through new ELD resources; and to exchange SCOS implementation ideas that center the needs and achievement of MLs.

Missed the Conference? Access the recordings, slide decks, and conference notebooks from the conference archive at bit.ly/NCELD22archives. The conference archive can also be accessed in the NC ELD Standards Resource Hub under "ELD Standards-Based Resources."

Checklist for Student Portfolios

These snapshots create a guide for analyzing student work samples and measuring KLU progress based on grade-level clusters.  These snapshots are just some of the ways students engage in each Key Language Use. These documents can be added to multilingual learners’ portfolios. Key Language Uses—Narrate, Inform, Explain, and Argue—are present across all grade levels and disciplines (WIDA, 2020).  The NCDPI ESL/Title III Team recommends teachers download the document to adapt it to classroom instruction.
