ACADEMIC STANDARDS

Welcome Back

On behalf of the K-12 Math and Science Section at DPI, we would like to welcome everyone back to another year of science education!  Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the North Carolina Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives for Science found on the Standard Course of Study and Supporting Resources for Science page of the NCDPI website.

#GoOpenNC Open Educator Resources

go open

GoOpenNC is the North Carolina, K-12, open education resources (OER) initiative. GoOpenNC is also the name of the platform where NC educators can search for, curate, and create openly-licensed, educational resources that are aligned to NC standards.

Connect with educators across North Carolina to share resources, learn how to incorporate OER into teaching and learning, and participate in a community of practice.

Smithsonian Science Education Center Resources

The Smithsonian Science Education Center has free curriculum resources for science teachers.  Feel free to browse their collection and tailor these resources to align with your classroom science instruction.

NCBOLD22 graphic

The division of Digital Teaching and Learning (DTL) is excited to announce its new iteration of NCBOLD for this summer. Previously NCBOLD had been a virtual professional learning opportunity for public school educators throughout North Carolina.  Realizing the importance of high quality, face to face professional learning, DTL will offer an all day digital teaching and learning conference in each of the educational regions throughout our state.  NCBOLD has recruited current, practicing educators with a proven track record of delivering high quality and innovative professional learning tied to the Digital Learning Competencies for both educators and administrators and the Digital Learning Standards for students. These NCBOLD ambassadors will create and execute innovative sessions that will allow practicing educators to effectively integrate digital teaching and learning in their classrooms. For the summer of 2022, NCBOLD will be hosted at the following locations.

K-12 Science Standards Revision Update

The Internal Procedures Manual on pages 12-18 provides greater detail on where we are in the Science Standards Revision Process.  The following actions have been completed: The stakeholder survey window has been closed.  The Data Review Committee (DRC) members have been selected.  Six interviews have been completed, as well as two focus groups.  The DRC will review raw data and trends on the current standards and make recommendations based on this data for the Standards Writing Team (SWT) to consider as they revise the standards.  The DRC will review extensive data collected by surveys, focus groups, and interviews, as well as research on other states’ standards, national standards and frameworks, and scholarly research.  Currently in progress is as follows: The SWT is being selected.  The stakeholder survey is still in progress.  Interview and focus group data will be sent to the Office of Learning Recovery (OLR).  Public School Unit (PSU) survey collection and remaining focus groups will be completed by mid-August.  Science has 70% of the PSU surveys back with the goal of at least 80%.
