NCDPI Literacy Instruction Standards Toolkit (LIST)

The NCDPI English Language Arts (ELA) team has recently released the Literacy Instruction Standards Toolkit (LIST) as a repository for all stakeholders. This repository provides a variety of resources for supporting administrators, educators, and parents during the implementation of the new Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS). While the NC Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) sets student expectations, the LIS and their associated instructional practices set expectations for teaching literacy, including biliteracy.

The LIS are organized by grade-band (linked below) and can be used to ensure that all teachers across North Carolina have a common understanding and delivery of literacy instruction in any language. For World Languages, the elementary LIS designed for Pre-K, K-2, and 3-5 can inform literacy instruction for dual language/immersion (DL/I) programs, as well as Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) programs. The secondary LIS documents for grades 6-8 and 9-12 can be used with DL/I continuation and heritage language programs, beginning and continuing middle school courses, and high school credit courses at all levels, I - VIII.

Literacy Instruction Standards Toolkit

The Literacy Instruction Standards Toolkit (LIST) houses a range of resources and offers users an opportunity to determine their own specific needs and find materials that suit them. This Canvas repository can be accessed with or without a Canvas account. Browse through the resources to help you learn, plan, instruct, review, and inform yourself or others. Check back periodically as we'll add more LIS resources throughout the 2022-2023 school year.

K-12 Standards Updates

NCDPI's Division of Academic Standards has announced the following Standards Review and Revision Updates. Please share this information with anyone who may be interested, including World Language educators and stakeholders who are involved with programs where content from other disciplines is taught in a language other than English, such as dual language/immersion (DL/I) programs or language for specific purpose courses that are part of career and certification pathways (Medical Spanish, Business German, etc.).

Science Standards Writing Team Application

The K-12 Science team has extended the window for applying to be a part of the K-12 Science Standards Writing Team (SWT) until 12:00pm, Wednesday, June 15. A full explanation of the requirements for the SWT can be found in the SWT Scope of Work document. Anyone who has not yet had a chance to apply can still do so at https://ncdpi.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_28Zu4dqqa0lK4bc.

The K-12 Healthful Living and Science teams are seeking input on the current K-12 North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) in their areas from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies. These surveys are being shared to gather thoughtful input and comments from stakeholders familiar with the Health Education, Physical Education, and Science standards to inform revision decisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards. Your feedback is extremely valuable to the standards revision process.

Please use the links below to access the All-Stakeholder, or Standard-by-Standard, Surveys that are open for submissions through early July.
