Growing Success for Multilingual Learners

Growing Success for Multilingual Learners Summer Conference

Virtual on June 20 - 24

The NCDPI ESL/Title III Team invites ALL educators of Multilingual Learners (MLs) to participate in the Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference: From Standards to Success, which has been designed for a virtual environment. During this summer’s conference, educators will have an opportunity to think deeply about the 2020 NC ELD Standard Course of Study (SCOS), to reimagine instruction through new ELD resources, and to exchange SCOS implementation ideas that center the needs and achievement of MLs.

To combat online fatigue, the NCDPI ESL/Title III team put together a program that spans five days with sessions running for two hours. The 2022 Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference is anchored by a professional learning series organized by educator role, and participants may register to attend any of the sessions from the four pathways below:

  • Content Area Teachers: Those who work predominantly in the classroom with MLs and non-MLs on subject areas, such as ELA, science, math, social studies, arts, etc.
  • ESL Specialists/EL Lead Teachers: Those who provide professional development, curate or develop materials for ESL classes, and/or have administrative duties as well as educational duties
  • ESL Teachers: Those who work predominantly in the classroom with MLs on language development
  • Multifaceted Roles: Those who serve in two or more of the above roles

Office Hours will complement each day’s course and will be held 3:30 - 4:30 pm. Come to these informal, small-group sessions to pose questions to speakers, share ideas, or meet with other educators in the field. Office Hours do not require registration.

Register now using the links in the Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference program booklet.

NC Virtual Opportunities

NC Virtual serves students with online courses, provides educators with professional development, and partners with districts on course resources. Please see the information below for upcoming opportunities.

2022 - 2023 Catalog for Students

Courses available in 9 World Languages

NC Virtual's 2022 - 2023 Catalog includes high school credit courses in American Sign Language (ASL), Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and Spanish. Registration is open for the new academic year, and school e-learning advisors, as well as parents and students in public, private, and home schools, can explore NC Virtual as a learning solution for grades 6 - 12.

Partnership & QM-Certified Courses for Districts

Districts can explore the Partnership Course Program that allows them to expand their online course options while using their local teachers. Districts can enter a partnership agreement by purchasing enrollments in a select number of NC Virtual courses that are certified by Quality Matters. NC Virtual provides the technology, content, training, and support while districts provide their own teachers so that they have more local control over how to implement and manage their virtual programs.

NC Virtual is among the top 10 K-12 organizations in the world with Quality Matters or QM-certified courses, which means they have met QM Course Design Standards or QM Program Review criteria in a rigorous review process. Visit the QM-certified courses page for a current list of many subjects, including World Language courses in French, Japanese, and Spanish.

Professional Development for Educators

NC Virtual also provides free professional development, like the Digital Transition Webinars for Educators and the Teacher Online Training course to prepare educations for online learning. The TOT course is offered at different times throughout the year as a facilitator-led asynchronous course. Recently, it became available as a self-paced course for 2 CEUs or approximately 20 hours, and can be found as "Introduction to Online Learning and Content Development" on the NC Virtual PD Courses for Educators page.

Note: The self-paced course is the equivalent of the facilitated course, so please do not retake it if you participated in the facilitated version. NC Virtual will be launching a new, more advanced, facilitated course this fall for prior participants.

Please see the K-20 Professional Development page for additional events, which is on FLANC's website under the Resources tab.
