Friday Institute for Educational Innovation Math Tutoring Pilot Program

The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation invites districts to participate in a pilot program to build a 6th grade mathematics tutoring program.

School(s) will receive a $500 stipend for participating in the project beginning in either Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 and ending in Spring 2024. Participating teachers and tutors will receive stipends and project staff will provide ongoing assistance and technical support.

The pilot tutoring program uses ASSISTments, a free online math practice and assessment tool that is a proven intervention for mathematics learning.

2020 TOY and Special Advisor to the Superintendent: Educator Engagement Talk Proposed Licensure Model

"State education officials are working on a plan to overhaul how North Carolina teachers are paid and licensed, and they're seeking feedback from teachers on the proposal.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is holding virtual feedback sessions this month with about 300 teachers or teacher-candidates from across the state who were invited by their districts or schools of education.

Two former classroom teachers, Julie Pittman and Maureen Stover, are part of the team at DPI working on this effort. Pittman, who is the assistant to the state superintendent for teacher engagement, is leading the feedback sessions. Stover is the 2020 North Carolina Teacher of the Year and serves on a commission reviewing the plan. They helped answer the following questions."

Greene County School Leader Named 2022 NC Wells Fargo Principal of the Year

Last Friday, Dr. Patrick Greene, principal of Greene Central High School in Greene County, was named the 2022 Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year.

During his nine years leading the small, rural high school in eastern North Carolina, Greene has helped the school shed its status as one of the state’s lowest performing schools to achieve high growth in the two years prior to the COVID pandemic, which forced the suspension of school accountability measures.

Greene says his approach to leading the school to improved performance is based on empowering others – teachers and students – to transform the school’s culture to focus relentlessly on a vision where all students “graduate prepared for college, the workforce and life as global citizens.”
