2022 Growing Success for Multilingual Learners Summer Conference

From Standards to Success | June 20- 24, 2022

The NCDPI ESL/Title III Team invites ALL educators of Multilingual Learners (MLs) to participate in the Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference. During this summer’s conference, educators will have an opportunity to think deeply about the 2020 NC ELD Standard Course of Study (SCOS); to reimagine instruction through new ELD resources; and to exchange SCOS implementation ideas that center the needs and achievement of MLs.

In order to address how opportunities presented by the 2020 NC ELD SCOS can be both understood and actualized for MLs, the 2022 Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference will center around the theme: From Standards to Success.

This year’s conference has been designed for a virtual environment. The NCDPI ESL/Title III Team hopes the virtual format will allow educators to minimize the disruptions to their day-to-day responsibilities and minimize time away from family and friends. To combat online fatigue, the NCDPI ESL/Title III team put together a program that spans five days with sessions running for two hours. The 2022 Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference is anchored by a professional learning series organized by educator role.

Participants may register to attend any of the sessions from the four pathways below:

  • ESL Specialists/EL Lead Teachers: those who provide professional development, curate or develop materials for ESL classes, and/or have administrative duties as well as educational duties
  • ESL Teachers: Those who work predominantly in the classroom with MLs on language development
  • Content Area Teachers: Those who work predominantly in the classroom with MLs and non-MLs on subject areas, such as ELA, science, math, social studies, arts, etc.
  • Multifaceted Roles: Those who serve in two or more of the above roles

We encourage EL Coordinators to choose the pathways that best suit them.

Office Hours will complement each day’s course and will be held 3:30 - 4:30 PM. Come to these informal, small-group sessions to pose questions to speakers, share ideas, or meet with other educators in the field. Office Hours do not require registration.

New Funding Opportunities

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is often presented with funding opportunities for schools and districts. New to the process, the Division of Academic Standards now hosts grants that support Science and Technology work within your school or district.

Some of the most recent opportunities include the ESSERIII Educational and Competitive After-School Robotics Grant Program as well as the Plasma Games STEM Pilot Program, designed to bridge the gap between chemistry and physical science classes and career and technical education (CTE) career pathways. Both of these programs can be applied for through your district office.

Be sure to visit both the NCDPI Funding Opportunities webpage often as well as the Division of Academic Standards homepage, where grant opportunities can be found.
