Amendments

April Requests

CSAB voted to approve the merger and mission change amendment request proposed for Triangle Math and Science, Triad Math and Science, Queen City Stem and The Math and Science Academy of Apex. The approval, however, was contingent upon bringing a policy suggestion forward to State Board regarding guidelines for approving board mergers/multiple schools under one board. Old Main Stream Academy was approved for weighted lottery. Oak Hill was granted an enrollment increase. Revitalize, a planning year school, was denied an enrollment increase. North Oak was granted a second delay.

All approved requests will go forward to the State Board of Education in May. For questions about the amendment process, reach out to Ashley.Baquero@dpi.nc.gov. All amendment materials can be found on Eboard. If you have feedback/input regarding guidelines for school board mergers and situations where one board is responsible for multiple schools, please feel free to reach out to Ashley Baquero at the email above or 984-236-2708.

As a reminder, amendments requiring SBE approval take a minimum of 2-3 months AFTER all materials are accurately submitted. OCS will begin to enforce strict guidelines for submitting materials at least one week prior to a CSAB meeting. With over 200 schools, staff needs more time to prepare materials properly. Please plan ahead for all requests.

2021 Charter Schools Annual Report

Due to General Assembly 6/15/22

Ms. Ashley Baquero presented this year's Annual Report to CSAB in April. The report highlights everything from enrollment and demographic trends, to financing and innovation. This year's report showed a continued increase in charter school ADM despite decreases seen throughout the pandemic in traditional LEAs. In addition, racial/ethnic demographics show close alignment to LEA schools, with the exception being Hispanic students, of which LEA schools enroll significantly more. New guidelines for EDS data collection is discussed along with increases in weighted lottery use, NSLP participation, and bus transportation. Finally, OCS was proud to profile a variety of schools in the innovation section. From the Blue Ridge mountains to the Sandhills to the Coast, our charters are offering and implementing innovative, exciting, and supportive programs for NC students.
