#IAmCS 2022 Summit
The #IAMCS (I Am Computer Science) 2022 Summit Event is for NC 6-12th grade students who are interested in computer science, AI, robotics, and STEM!
The #IAmCS Campaign aims to move the needle on equity-focused strategies to strengthen the North Carolina Computer Science landscape for all students. We are beyond excited to share we will host the second annual #IAmCS Student-Led Summit on Saturday, April 30th at the Friday Institute! Last year we had a passionate and knowledgeable group of phenomenal student leaders who put together a beautiful summit that highlighted students across our state as the keynote speakers, breakout session facilitators, and moderators and we are beyond excited to host this next summer F2F. We would truly appreciate your support in getting the word out to schools and districts to ensure that we have students who are interested and involved in CS, STEM, robotics, AI, etc. to have the opportunity to register and attend. The summit will be an opportunity for students across the state to connect with other students interested in these areas and offers a moment to be uplifted and inspired to break barriers that may hinder them from pursuing career pathways leading to computer science.
We hope to see you there!

FREE Online Professional Development for Teachers!
Amplifying Statistics and Data Science in Classrooms
Our world is rich with data sources, and today’s media is flooded with graphs and data that require data literate citizens. Technology makes data more accessible than ever before, and statistics and data science skills can help students be ready for data-intensive STEM careers.
Amplifying Statistics and Data Science in Classrooms is a new set of FREE online modules that help educators in grades 6-12:
● Develop strategies for using an investigation cycle to teach statistics and data science
● Ignite students' interest in real world data investigations with technology
● Emphasize inferential reasoning through posing different types of investigative questions
● Earn certificates for up to 40 hrs to apply to CEUs.
Activities and strategies can help you meet the NC statistics standards in grades 6-8, Math 1, 2, 3, AP Statistics, and the new Math 4 course!
Learn more and register at http://go.ncsu.edu/amplifystats
Use this flyer to share the opportunity with colleagues.
Once registered, you will always have access to learn at your own pace.
If you have questions or may be interested in having a team of teachers work together with the online modules, contact lead instructors from NC State:

From "English Learner" to "Multilingual Learner"
Using Asset-Based Language
Dear Educators:
As part of its asset-based belief system, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) will now begin using “Multilingual Learner” (ML) when referring to students who use other languages in addition to English. This shift in language takes an asset-based approach to: 1) avoid labeling students in terms of the language they do not yet know; 2) acknowledge that students’ first languages and cultures are a strength; and 3) reiterate the importance of literacy and proficiency in multiple languages.
ML includes students who are commonly referred to as: English language learners (ELLs), newcomers, students with interrupted formal schooling (SIFE), long-term English learners (L-TELs), English learners with disabilities, gifted and talented English learners, and students with English as an additional language (EAL) (WIDA 2020).
We recognize that, in the field of K-12 education, various terms are used to describe MLs. For policy & legislation purposes, NCDPI will maintain the term “English Learners.” For all other purposes, NCDPI will begin to use the term “Multilingual Learner.”
While shifting to this language is a local decision, we hope Public School Units (PSUs) will join NCDPI in using this asset-based and inclusive term.
Thank you for all you do for our multilingual learners in North Carolina.
For questions, please contact Dr. Stacy Daniel, ELA and Languages Section Chief at stacy.daniel@dpi.nc.gov or 984-236-2829.
