Government and Community Affairs Committee - Goals – Strengthen statewide support for district Student Mental Health, Social- Emotional Learning, and Whole Child, Whole School, Whole Community initiatives and programs. – Coordinate and consolidate partnerships with PSU’s and statewide organizations whose primary focus is on developing and implementing teacher recruitment and retention strategies, particularly with educators of color. – Focus on recruitment partnerships including Community Colleges and EPP - IHE’s through increased communication and collaboration on specific teacher recruitment and licensure initiatives

Those named as Fellows may attend any of the program’s eight partner institutions: Elon University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, North Carolina State University, Meredith College, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
The commission selected winners after conducting interviews with each finalist. The commission received 203 applications.
“We’re proud to welcome these Teaching Fellows into the program, and eventually into classrooms across North Carolina,” said Peter Hans, president of the University of North Carolina System. “This program attracts some of the best and brightest into the teaching profession for the long-term benefit of the state and its K-12 students. The commission considered grade point average, leadership and experience, awards and honors, written essays, and interviews to narrow this pool of applicants. Standardized test scores from SAT/ACT were again optional due to COVID-19 test cancellations.

WRAL Emily Walkenhorst April 4, 2022: State estimate says nearly $1B of the Leandro Plan has been funded - North Carolina has funded $958.3 million of the $1.75 billion required by the Leandro Plan for this year and next year, according to Kristen Walker, chief deputy director of the State Budget. Walker provided a sworn affidavit Monday afternoon on her analysis.
