CAL Virtual Institutes

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) institutes provide research-based strategies and practical, hands-on tools, and help teachers meet the language and literacy demands of content instruction for various language learners, including students in dual language/immersion (DL/I) and heritage language programs. Here are some of their spring offerings.

Fostering Spanish Language & Literacy Development

April 4 - 12

CAL's Spanish Literacy Institute (¡en español!), Fostering Spanish Language and Literacy Development, is a 15-hour synchronous and asynchronous institute that provides effective methodologies for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish to students in K-8 in a wide variety of programs where Spanish is the language of instruction. Classroom practices are framed by an understanding of Spanish linguistic features.

This session is intended for district and school leaders (to include principals, assistant principals, and teacher leaders) who are seeking to deepen their practical understanding of the “nuts and bolts” of effective dual language programming.

SIOP for Dual Language Programs

May 16 - 24 with early bird discount until April 18

CAL's Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) for Dual Language Programs Institute, Developing Academic Language and Content in Two Languages, is a 15-hour virtual offering designed to help leaders, specialists, coaches, and teachers plan for and implement CAL SIOP methods in their programs.

PreK-8 dual language (DL), or two-way immersion, teachers and coaches will learn about and practice using the eight components of the SIOP Model to effectively teach language and content, while addressing the three pillars of dual language/immersion programs: bilingualism and biliteracy, high academic achievement, and socio-cultural competence. No prior knowledge of the SIOP Model is required for participation.
