Charter Schools Advisory Board Highlights

CSAB Basics

  • CSAB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSAB meeting is April 11-12, 2022  at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSAB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page
  • CSAB action items are heard the following month at State Board of Education meetings. Those meeting agendas are also found on Eboard.

Amendments

March Requests

CSAB voted to table the merger and mission change amendment request proposed for Triangle Math and Science, Triad Math and Science, Queen City Stem and The Math and Science Academy of Apex.  School of Arts for Boys (SABA) was approved for a grade level revision. Monroe Charter Academy and Guilford Preparatory Academy were both approved for weighted lotteries.

All approved requests will go forward to the State Board of Education in April. For questions about the amendment process, reach out to Ashley.Baquero@dpi.nc.gov. All amendment materials can be found on Eboard. 

 


COVID-19 Impact Analysis of Lost Instructional Time

Office of Learning Recovery and Acceleration (OLR)

Michael Maher, Director of the Office of Learning Recovery and Acceleration (OLR), and Dr. Jeni Corn, Director of Research and Evaluation, presented the results of the COVID-19 Impact Analysis of Lost Instructional Time. Dr. Maher stated the summary of impact is that there was a negative impact for all students in almost all subjects, with greatest negative impact in middle school math and biology.

 

Information was provided about the Summer Career Accelerator and Summer Bridge Academy. Additional resources were discussed  as the CSAB expressed the need for targeted interventions due to lost instructional time during the pandemic.

Other Business 

  • Ms. Kristie VanAuken, Special Advisor to the Superintendent: Workforce Engagement, presented regarding the NC Portrait of a Graduate project.
  • Low performing school updates were provided by: Concord Lake Steam Academy, Gate City Charter, Ascend Leadership Academy and KIPP NC
  • Ms. Joy Warner, Principal and Founder of Community School of Davidson (CSD), spoke about her experience leading a high school Leadership Seminar designed to build student capacity. She spoke about the school’s commitment to personalized learning and building leadership among students.
  • Mr. Dave Machado, OCS Director, presented a plaque to Ms. Joy Warner for her service to the charter community. 
  • Mr. Dave Machado, OCS Director, presented a plaque to Mrs. Lynn Kroeger, who will be leaving North Carolina and the CSAB this spring.
  • The 2022 Charter Application Cycle is open through Friday April 29, 2022.
