While Asheboro City Schools believes their location and tech. advancements make them an attractive education choice for families, they believe it is the diversity of their students that fuels their desire to harness the energy to engage their communities. They believe that each student deserves to be seen, heard, valued, and served through opportunities to explore pathways to success.
Back in March of 2020, the Asheboro City Board of Education approved one of the first Equity Policies in the state, breaking down barriers to student success by examining their own biases, prejudices, and processes/ procedures . This district culture was in full effect as the NC Public Schools #districtvisitsvoices Team listened and learned from Superintendent Aaron Woody and his leadership team.
We began our visit learning from the ACS Curriculum and Instruction Team and Donna Lee Loflin Elementary School, Principal Lisa Hayes, which has a transformational school equity model that reflects the district’s commitment to its community- ALL of its members. We listened to teachers who focused on their innovative approach to active learning, engaging learners creating authentic connections in real-life application. They also tied this to their Equity Council and the focus on equitable outcomes for all students. We then discussed the school board’s commitment to this movement with Board Chair, Michael Smith, as well as support from NC House Representative Pat Hurley.
After working with the Donna L. Loflin Team, we headed to Asheboro High School, where we were met by Principal Dr. Penny Crooks, and CTE administrator, amd. Sarah Beth Robbins. She introduced her programs and students and our team was able to visit the Advanced Manufacturing Lan, where students were demonstrating a myriad of equipment and experiences, helping them prepare for college and career readiness.
Lastly, I was able to sneak away and watch one of my #NCEduHeroes Molly Bunch Lyons as she engaged her English class in creating their own short stories. After almost 20 years as a friend and colleague, Molly still is one of the greatest educators I know. Our state owes a great debt to you and your fellow teachers for your decades of passion and dedication. Thank you!
And thank you, Dr. Woody, as our team was moved by our time learning from ACS. Your leadership and friendship continues to amaze me and I look forward to this being the first of many visits we will make as we share your exemplary model with other districts looking to take the first step in creating, designing, amd implementing an Equity Policy that serves their students and families- ALL of THEM, EACH and EVERY!
