State Board of Education Mission: The mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education is to use its constitutional authority to guard and maintain the right of a sound, basic education for every child in North Carolina Public Schools.

• EdNC Alex Granados Feb. 16, 2022: Education cabinet takes on data, workforce strategy, and more - Governor Cooper signed an executive order Tuesday creating a governance board for the North Carolina Longitudinal Data System (NCLDS). The NCLDS is a “system of systems” that connects data across agencies. Read the roadmap for the NCLDS here.

The nine regional Wells Fargo principals of the year are:

• Northeast: Alison Covington, South Greenville Elementary (Pitt County Schools)
• Southeast: Dr. Patrick Greene, Greene Central High (Greene County Schools)
• North Central: Keith Richardson, Knightdale High (Wake County Public Schools)
• Sandhills: Antonio Covington, East Hoke Middle (Hoke County Schools)   
• Piedmont-Triad: KaTrinka Brown, Jackson Middle (Guilford County Schools)         
• Southwest: Larenda Denien, Idlewild Elementary (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools)     
• Northwest: Dr. Heather Melton Freeman, North Wilkes Middle (Wilkes County Schools)

A new, more affordable way to become a teacher - Higher Ed Works

• The Community College System signed an agreement with the UNC System in August to provide seamless transfers for aspiring teachers from 55 community colleges to UNC campuses.

  Teacher candidates can earn a two-year associate’s degree in teacher preparation in arts or sciences, Stith says. Then they can transfer to a university in the UNC System to complete their teaching degree.
