NC Governor’s School Gets a New Western Campus at Winston-Salem State University

"The western campus of the North Carolina Governor’s school will have a new home beginning this summer, moving from High Point University, where it was located for the last three years, to Winston-Salem State University.

The N.C. State Board of Education was updated today on the new site for the selective residential summer program for gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors. The new campus represents a return of the Governor’s School to Winston-Salem, where it began at Salem College in 1963."

Decodable Text Webinar Series: Effective Use of Decodable Text

Early learners benefit from the opportunity to practice reading words with previously taught phonic elements. Decodable text is controlled to
provide appropriate practice and support reading growth.

NC Continues to Lead in National Board-Certified Teachers

"The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards has announced that North Carolina continues to lead the nation with teachers who hold national board certification, with 399 teachers achieving this demanding certification in 2020-21.

"North Carolina now has a total of 23,418 teachers with the respected National Board Certification, offered by the Arlington, Va.-based non-profit organization. This certification is a way to recognize the accomplished instruction that is practiced in North Carolina's classrooms while also helping teachers strengthen their knowledge and skills."

Black History Month

In honor of Black History month, NCDPI will share facts about North Carolina's African American history.

The Pea Island Life-Saving Station, the only U.S. Life-Saving Service station with a crew of African-Americans, performed many heroic acts. Their 1896 rescue of all nine passengers on the three-masted schooner E.S. Newman during a hurricane earned them a posthumous Gold Lifesaving Medal in 1996. Their efforts are honored at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, one of the most complete, historic stations of its kind in the United States.
