ESL/Title III Standards Update

ACADEMIC STANDARDS

Monthly Standards Update -- 7th Issue

In March 2021, the North Carolina State Board of Education unanimously approved the 2020 ELD Standard Course of Study (SCOS) for implementation in the 2022-2023 school year. This approval marked the start of the Installation Phase where the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team prepares for initial implementation of the ELD SCOS through planning PSU professional development, support, and resource development.

In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Installation Phase, the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team provides monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELD SCOS.  These updates are sent every first Tuesday of the month.

January 12th Session Archives

On January 12, 2022, EL Coordinators from across the state met to discuss the major revisions to the SCOS, the ELD Standards Resources Hub, and spring implementation PD. View the recording of this meeting to learn updates which may inform district and/or school implementation of the English learner program, professional development, and/or family engagement.

Thank you

Thank You

On behalf of the entire ESL/Title III Team, we wanted to thank our writers for all their dedication to the ELD Support Document project. We appreciate their patience, flexibility, and expertise as we navigated Standards Installation together.

The ELD Standards Support Documents initial drafts are complete. This marks the beginning of finalizing and editing these documents for release. We hope to release the final version of these materials to the field via the ELD Standards Resource Hub in March 2022.

Meeting the Needs of English Learners in Arts Education

"No matter how you say it, “Art” reaches across languages and geography. All students deserve to have access to high-quality arts instruction, which includes ensuring that our English Learners are able to participate in Visual Art, Dance, Theatre, and Music programs."

The NCDPI ESL/Title III and Arts Education Teams have prepared a series for both District ESL and Arts Education Leaders to understand why utilizing the WIDA Framework in Arts Education is important, hear how arts teachers are meeting the needs of ELs in the field, and explore a new NCDPI resource with concrete examples of supporting English Learners all four arts areas.

Part I: Arts Education for ALL English Learners - January 25, 2022, 3:00 pm (See Archives)

Part II: Classroom Applications for English Learners - February 2, 2022, 3:00 pm (Registration link)

Save-The-Date for Your PSU's Implementation PD!

From March 21-April 8, 2022, the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team will provide professional development on implementation of the NC ELD Standard Course of Study and share the resources housed in the NC ELD Standards Resource Hub. Professional development will be provided virtually and will be differentiated based on current EL counts.  To determine your PSU’s assigned dates, use the guidance below to save-the-date:

Under 50 ELs: March 21 or March 23

50-100 ELs: March 25 or March 28

100 - 499 ELs: March 29 or March 30

500+ ELs: April 1

*Note: While the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team encourages PSUs to attend PD on the date(s) that fit their PSU's profiles, we understand that PSUs may need to select date(s) outside of these recommendations due to their teams' availability.

In preparation for this PD, the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team invites PSUs to identify team members to attend. The NCDPI ESL/Title III strongly recommends each PSU implementation team be comprised of the following stakeholders:

  • 1 EL Coordinator
  • 1 Instructional Coach
  • 1 Content Teacher
  • 1 ESL Teacher
  • 1 Administrator
  • 1 Parent Liaison

The NCDPI ESL/Title III Team strongly suggests PSU Teams notify their district or school leadership of those who plan to attend.  Sessions will be virtual and scheduled with a morning session from 9:00 - 11:00 am and an afternoon session from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

Registration links to come!
