NC DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION

Barry Pace

New Director of Modernization, Barry Pace

We are excited to announce that Mr. Barry Pace is the new Director of Modernization!

Mr. Pace has over 25 years of experience as a NC educator where he has worked to leverage technology within all aspects of public education.  He has formerly served as the Director of Technology in Buncombe and McDowell Counties, and in March 2021, Mr. Pace was recognized as the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction K-12 Technology Director of the Year.

As a founding member of the DPI School Connectivity Team, Mr. Pace implemented bringing fiber to all buildings, visual literacy to every classroom, wireless connectivity and laid the foundation for one-to-one computing environments.  In 2014, he returned to implementing technology at the district level by spearheading an aggressive one-to-one Digital Learning Initiative as Buncombe County School's Director of Technology.  Currently, all 23,000 students in Buncombe are and have been one-to-one since 2018, and students without Internet at home have access to a mobile hotspot.

Mr. Pace looks forward to stewarding a statewide effort to implement a cohesive, sustainable, securable, and flexible set of modernized business systems designed to best serve a diverse set of K-12 public schools. He will begin the role of Director of School Systems Modernization on February 1, 2022.

Ready, Set, App!

Registration for NCBCE’s 3rd Annual Ready, Set, App! Competition is Open!

This mobile app building competition is open to all NC high schoolers. It serves as a great opportunity for students to develop skills in design thinking by having them find creative and innovative solutions to problems in their community. In addition to this, students will develop skills in coding, graphic design, presentation, teamwork, critical thinking, and so much more.

Visit www.ncbce.org/ready-set-app to sign up.

For more information about the competition and its requirements, please read below.

Ready, Set, App! Quick Start Guide:

What:  North Carolina Business Committee for Education’s Ready, Set, App! challenge is a mobile app development competition for high school students sponsored by Lenovo™. Student groups are asked to develop a mobile app to solve a problem in their school or community.

Who:  Ready, Set, App! is open to all NC high school students. Students will participate in groups of 3 - 5 along with a teacher advisor or faculty leader.

When:  Registration is open now until January 28, 2022. Projects are due April 1, 2022.

How:  Student groups will create a functioning mobile app using a mobile app development platform (e.g., MIT App Inventor) to solve a problem in their school or community. They will then create a two-part video that includes an app pitch with demo, and a group reflection. Those videos will then be voted on, and the top teams will go to the final pitch competition where they will pitch their apps to a live audience and panel of professionals for the chance to win prizes courtesy of Lenovo™.

New Social Studies Standards in Schoolnet

The updated 2021 Social Studies standards are now live in Schoolnet! For the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year, educators will be able to see both the old and the new Social Studies standards in Schoolnet.

NCDPI is working with its content partners to realign and update Social Studies content for the 2022-2023 school year. The existing content aligned to the old standards will remain available for the remainder of this school year.

In the meantime, PSUs may choose to begin realigning local content now at their discretion. The old standards and aligned content will be retired over the summer and will no longer be available in 2022-2023.

COVID

Memo: PSU COVID Reporting

Education Leaders,

During the month of January 2022, the state has experienced a severe increase in COVID-19 cases which is impacting personnel and some schools’ ability to operate. As a result, many PSUs have been required to close classrooms, grade levels, or entire schools. This has also led to an increase in the required reporting and questions regarding the proper path for deciding how, when, and what to close.

This communique will provide a refresher to PSUs on how to decide and report incidents.
