Happy New Year

Greetings, AP/IB/CIE Coordinators,

Happy January 2022!

I hope your week is going well. This first semester has been far from easy, for adults and children alike. Over the winter break, I hope you were able to take some time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. Please reach out if I can support you. This is a short update with a few reminders for January.

2021-2022 AP/IB/CIE Teacher Bonus Pay

Some Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge International Education (CIE) teachers will qualify for bonus pay in January depending on their students’ scores from the 2020-2021 administration of AP, IB, and AICE exams, based on legislation to reward advanced course teacher performance and support teacher retention as well as to encourage student learning and improvement. Teachers are eligible for AP/IB/CIE bonus pay if they remain teaching in the same LEA or charter school the following year until January 1 of the corresponding school year that the bonus is paid. This funding continues in the approved state budget.

Please follow up with your Finance Department with a list of teachers who are eligible for the bonus in January, as we do not provide a list of teachers eligible. New information for NCVPS teachers has been provided. Please see the updated 2022 AP/IB/CIE Teacher Bonus Pay FAQ.

Presidential Award

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. The Awards were established by Congress in 1983.

Awards are given to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teachers from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, or the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands).

The award recognizes those teachers have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas. Awardees reflect the expertise and dedication of the Nation's teaching corps, and they demonstrate the positive impact of excellent teachers on student achievement.

Recipients of the award receive the following:

  • A certificate signed by the President of the United States.
  • A paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities.
  • A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.
  • An opportunity to build lasting partnerships with colleagues across the nation.

During the 2021-22 school year, the Presidential Awards will recognize K-6 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teachers.

Please visit www.paemst.org to nominate great K-6 teachers! Deadline for nominations is January 7. However, the applications are due February 6, 2022.
