Charter Schools Advisory Board Highlights

December 6-7th 2021

CSAB Basics

  • CSAB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • Next meeting is January 10-11th at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSAB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page
  • CSAB action items are heard the following month at State Board of Education meetings. Those meeting agendas are also found on Eboard.

Applications - 2021 Cycle

December Applicant Interviews

CSAB heard from five standard timeline applicants this month. These five applicants were seeking approval to open in Fall 2023. Movement School Northwest was approved for recommendation to SBE. Great Opportunities and Boundless Innovation for Girls (GO BIG) and Honor Preparatory Academy were held over for a second round. Myrtis Simpson Walker Academy for Boys and Clara Science Academy were denied recommendation to SBE.

Standard timeline (opening Fall 2023) interviews will continue in January.  Interviews will continue until all 21 applicants receive a recommendation.

Amendments

December Requests 

Franklin School of Innovation and Next Generation Academy were approved for weighted lottery admissions.Cardinal Charter Academy at Wendell Falls, KIPP Durham, Telra Institute, and United Community School were approved for enrollment expansion requests. Telra Institute was also approved for participation in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The enrollment expansion request for Unity Classical was tabled for a subsequent CSAB meeting.  All approved requests will go forward to the State Board of Education in January. AIM 2021 Conference Banner: Accelerate, Invigorate, Motivate

Other Business 

  • Veritas Community School and Carter G. Woodson School gave updates to the CSAB. 
  • Dr. Shaunda Cooper, OCS, gave a presentation detailing the renewal term recommendations for the 2022 renewal cohort. These recommendations will be discussed at CSAB next month.
  • The CSAB recommended governance noncompliance for Torchlight Academy.
  • More than 100 charter school leaders and personnel were in attendance for the inaugural AIM Conference held at the Raleigh Convention Center.
