ADVANCED LEARNING AND GIFTED EDUCATION

Many thanks

Greetings, AP/IB/CIE Coordinators,

Thank you!

I am grateful for the work you do each day, likely juggling a variety of hats, and ensuring the students and teachers have the resources they need to meet guidelines and deadlines for your various programs. This first semester has been far from easy, for adults and children alike. Last week I hope you were able to take some time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. Please reach out if I can support you.

AP/IB/AICE Exam Fees Guidance 2021-2022

In Summer 2014, with SL2013-360 section 8.27, the General Assembly modified 115C.83.4A to enhance access and encourage participation in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses by appropriating funds to pay for all AP and IB exams for public school or charter school students who are enrolled in the corresponding AP/IB courses. In the summer of 2017, with SL2017-57 section 7.28, the General Assembly modified 115C-174.26A and SL2013-360 section 8.27 to include Cambridge International Education (CIE) AS-Level and A-Level courses as eligible advanced courses. This funding continues in the approved state budget.

For individual program information, see the Exam Fees Guidance for 2021-2022.

2021-2022 AP/IB/CIE Teacher Bonus Pay

Some Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge International Education (CIE) teachers will qualify for bonus pay in January depending on their students’ scores from the 2020-2021 administration of AP, IB, and AICE exams, based on legislation to reward advanced course teacher performance and support teacher retention as well as to encourage student learning and improvement. Teachers are eligible for AP/IB/CIE bonus pay if they remain teaching in the same LEA or charter school the following year until January 1 of the corresponding school year that the bonus is paid. This funding continues in the approved state budget.

Please follow up with your Finance Department with a list of teachers who are eligible for the bonus in January, as we do not provide a list of teachers eligible. Please see the 2022 AP/IB/CIE Teacher Bonus Pay FAQ.

IB Coordinators will find a new course code for Digital Society SL and HL, which is replacing the current ITGS course that was completely updated by the IBO.

If you have any questions or concerns please email brandon.young@dpi.nc.gov.

Important Policy Reminder - IB

There have been a couple of questions from IB Coordinators regarding social studies graduation requirements. Please remember GRAD-008, the State Board Policy which outlines which advanced courses satisfy graduation requirements. IB History SL was approved in March 2020 to satisfy the World History requirement.

Thank you all for your dedication and hard work to increase student participation and success in advanced courses in North Carolina. Please continue to reach out to me whenever I can support your work.
